Early Life • Oldest of 4 boys and 1 girl • Father Spence died, James put in charge of property • James would hunt small birds for fun • bring rifle to and from school, sometimes killed game by James would be part of dinner • Studied math and Latin • School named Campbelltown Academy. • College named William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia
Family Life • Two daughters and one son. Son sadly died very young. • Daughters were Eliza Kortright, Born 1787, and Maria Hester, born 1803. Both daughters educated.
