  2. Introduction • Born: April 28th 1758 Westmoreland County, Virginia • Died: July 4th1831 New York City • Elected: March 4th 1817 When he was 24 • He was a Democratic – Republican • interestingly, Monroe was the 3rd president to die on July 4th. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were the 1st two.

Early Life • Oldest of 4 boys and 1 girl • Father Spence died, James put in charge of property • James would hunt small birds for fun • bring rifle to and from school, sometimes killed game by James would be part of dinner • Studied math and Latin • School named Campbelltown Academy. • College named William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia

  4. Family Life • Two daughters and one son. Son sadly died very young. • Daughters were Eliza Kortright, Born 1787, and Maria Hester, born 1803. Both daughters educated.

  5. Elections • Daniel D. Tompkins vice pres. • First ran against James Madison but lost • Defeated Rufus King • Results 183 Monroe, 34 King
