  2. Every sentence requires 5 things: • a capital letter at the beginning; • a punctuation mark at the end; • a subject; • a predicate; • and a complete thought

  3. The three punctuation marks that can be used to end sentences are: • a period (.), • a question mark (?), • or an exclamation point (!).

  4. Use a period (.) • At the end of a telling sentence (a statement) • At the end of a directive (a command)

  5. Use a question mark (?) • At the end of an asking sentence (a question)

  6. Use an exclamation mark (!) • At the end of a sentence that shows excitement or strong emotion

  7. The subject is who or what the sentence is about. The boyis having a good time.

  8. The predicate tells what the subject is or does. The boyplays his drum loudly.

  9. If you have not written a sentence, you have written either afragmentor arun-on.

  10. Afragmentis a group of words that does not make a complete thought. • The baker • My mother • is a very good student • ran down the street yelling loudly • is yellow and green

  11. Arun-onis two or more complete thoughts, incorrectly punctuated as one sentence. • John is a good student he works hard and does his homework every night. • My vacation was fun we went to Disney World we saw Mickey Mouse.
