  1. Between U.S.A and Russia By Addis Yilma Space Race /Arms Race

  2. Context • The growth of atomic weapons between the two superpowers. • Who were The two superpowers during the cold war? • Why was the launch of sputnik so historically significant toward the space race? • The achievements of the superpowers involved in the space race. • The outcome of the space race and arms race between the two Cold War superpowers.

  3. The growth of atomic weapons between the two superpowers. In 1945 the United States had dropped two atomic bombs on Japan to end World War Two. Four years later, the Soviet Union built their own atomic bomb. A deadly arms race had begun. Both superpowers stockpiled nuclear weapons. By the end of the decade both sides were developing missiles to carry bombs to each other 's doorsteps.

  4. The growth of atomic weapons between the two superpowers. Neither superpower wanted to start an all-out war. Instead, they pursued their rivalry indirectly by supporting opposite sides in conflict in the third world. These were the poorer nations of Latin America, Asia and Africa. One such conflict brought the superpowers to the brink of war. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy learned that the Soviets were supplying Cuba with missiles. U.S navy ships blocked the island. The world waited to see if the Soviet Union would remove all missiles and missiles bases from Cuba. Finally, the Soviet Union agreed to remove them.

  5. Space Racebetween U.S.A and Soviet Union Space Race was a competition of space exploration between the United State and Soviet Union, which lasted roughly from 1957 to 1975. It involved the efforts to explore outer space with artificial satellites, to send humans into space, and to land people on the Moon. By 1960 the superpowers were in a space race as well as an arms race. Americans were stunned in 1957 when the Soviet sent Sputnik, a man-made satellite, into orbit around the earth. Throughout the 1960s,the two nations raced to see who would be first to put a person on the moon.

  6. Space Racebetween U.S.A and Soviet Union Americans cheered as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin made the first lunar landing in 1969.

  7. The two superpowers during the Cold War The Soviet Union was a strong Socialist republic. • The United States was strong Capitalist republic. • The Soviet Union and the United States were on the same side during World War 2. • The United State want all counties to be democratic and the Soviet Union wanted all countries to be communist • Both countries were powerful. • The Soviets had the worlds largest stockpile of nuclear weapon for the second half of the Cold War, while the U.S.A had the largest army in the world and had one of the two most powerful air forces in the world. • The Soviets had a very strong global intelligence network (KGB) while the U.S.A were powerful allies in Western Europe (NATO).

  8. Why the launch of Sputnik was so historically significant in the Space Race. Sputnik, the first man-made satellite, was launched on October 4, 1957 by the U.S.S.R.  It was little more than the size of a basketball and weighed 184 pounds.  Sputnik was not equipped with any scientific instruments, but orbited the earth once every 98 minutes.  It contained a single radio transmitter.

  9. Why the launch of Sputnik was so historically significant in the Space Race. Forty years later, the Cold War is over, and the Russian space program frightens only its own cosmonauts. That launch ushered in new political, military, technological, and scientific developments. While the Sputnik launch was a single event, it marked the start of the space age and the U.S.-U.S.S.R space race.

  10. The firsts achievements of the Space Race during Cold War They both sent humans to the moon. They both developed technology while they competed to be better than each other. They brought different types of atomic weapons and made the world fear each others countries. The Russians sent the first woman Valentina Tereshkova onto the moon. The Russian also sent a dog to the moon. Laika

  11. Cause and Effect of Cold War Soviet domination of eastern Europe. Communist victory in China. Distrust between United States and Soviet Union. Truman Doctrine and Marshall Plan. Founding of NATO and Warsaw Pact. East-West tension.

  12. Cause and effect of cold warcauses • Arms race between the United States and Soviet Union. • Rivalry between the United States and Soviet Union for world power.
