KOREA THE COLD WAR BEYOND EUROPE 1950-1953
Korea after World War Two 1945 :Korea controlled by Japan: after the Japanese capitulation (Sept 2nd) Soviets occupied the NORTH, Americans the SOUTH The two halves were divided by the 38th Parallel 1947 : elections held in the South supported by the US; The North had its own govt. backed by the Soviets 1948 : The US and the USSR withdrew troops but kept supporting each side. 1949:China became Communist and supported N Korea
Causes of the conflict • After Yalta, tensions between the USA and the USSR extended around the world • New Communist government in China : threat • Risk of “domino effect” • The USSR controlled North Korea while the US established democratic government in South Korea: (Syngman Rhee (S.Korea) v/s Kim Il Sung (N.Korea)
The Key Players • Truman • Syngman Rhee • UN • MacArthur • Bradley (replaced MacArthur) SOUTH • Kim Il Sung • Mao Tse Tung • Stalin NORTH
Main events • North Korean forces pushed South Korean into small area around Pusan: see map 1 • Truman called on support on UN Security Council (USSR also permanent member but boycotting meetings after refusal to admit China to UN):UN way to pass resolutions was changed and UN forces pushed North Korean forces back: see map 2 • UN forces driven back: General MacArthur:Pic called for use of atomic bomb map 3 • Fighting settled around 38th parallel and 1953, armistice signed at Panmunjom map 4 ( Stalemate)
April 1951 – MacArthur was removed from position and replaced by General Omar Bradley because he wanted to launch an A Bomb on North Korea. MacArthur 1880-1964 Bradley 1893-1981
Consequences • Korean War example of successful containment (for US) • Success for the UN (although some critics said It was the US puppet) • Massive damage to Korea – 1 in 10 of population killed Stats Korea is still divided today Korean farmer & his family fleeing from the fighting. Why would the US wish to prevent images like these reaching the American public?
