Agenda Lighting and the Energy Code: the most practical application • Interior Lighting • Automatic Lighting Shutoff • Space Control • Daylighting Controls • Parking Garages • Exterior Lighting Lighting Techniques and Technologies • Fluorescent • LED • Common Area Applications What’s next? AOBA / Current Trends in Sustainability
Lighting and the Energy Code:the most practical application Sustainable Sites Light Pollution Reduction Energy and Atmosphere Minimum Energy Performance Building Level Energy Metering Indoor Environmental Quality Interior Lighting Control Interior Lighting Quality AOBA / Current Trends in Sustainability
Lighting and the Energy Code:the most practical application AOBA / Current Trends in Sustainability
Lighting and the Energy Code:the most practical application ASHRAE 90.1-2010 In addition to all new construction, the new code applies to “alteration” of even 10% of the building lighting system if the installed LPD increases. AOBA / Current Trends in Sustainability
Interior LightingAutomatic Lighting Shutoff – ASHRAE 90.1 Section 9.4.1.1 Time clock or occupancy sensors. Required for all lighting not needed for 24-hour operation or occupant safety. Manual on or automatic on to 50% power. Except: corridors and stairwells restrooms entrance areas and lobbies Automatic off requirement after 30 minutes in many spaces. AOBA / Current Trends in Sustainability
Interior LightingSpace Control – ASHRAE 90.1 Section 9.4.1.2 Each space to have at least one control device. Step control required. After hours override required for a minimum of two hours. AOBA / Current Trends in Sustainability
Interior LightingDaylighting Controls – ASHRAE 90.1 Section 9.4.1.4 & 9.4.1.5 Photosensor control required for daylight areas. • Side daylighting with windows • Overhead daylighting with skylights and roof monitors Step control required. Exceptions only where exterior obstructions are present. AOBA / Current Trends in Sustainability
Interior LightingAdditional Controls – ASHRAE 90.1 Section 9.4.1.6 Separate Controls required for: - Accent and Display lighting • Case Lighting • Guest Room Lighting • Task Lighting • Stairwell Lighting AOBA / Current Trends in Sustainability
Parking Garage LightingControls – ASHRAE 90.1 Section 9.4.1.3 Reduction of power by minimum of 30% with 30 minutes of inactivity. Zones less than 3600SF. Daylight transition lighting. Photosensors required within 20’ of perimeter walls with 40% opening. AOBA / Current Trends in Sustainability
Exterior LightingControls – ASHRAE 90.1 Section 9.4.1.7 Exterior lighting to be automatically turned off with presence of daylight. All building and façade lighting to be shut off at night. • Between 12am and 6am, unless operating hours extend into this time. Any additional exterior lighting to be reduced to 30% output. Lighting Techniques and TechnologiesFluorescent Excellent source of ambient, diffuse light. Perfect for: Fitness centers Dining Areas Perimeter Coves Vanities Utility Closets AOBA / Current Trends in Sustainability
Lighting Techniques and TechnologiesLED No reason all downlights (in any height space) shouldn’t be LED. Maintenance Cost Energy savings AOBA / Current Trends in Sustainability
Lighting Techniques and TechnologiesLED Perfect for: Exterior Lobbies Dimming Applications Linear Parking Garages AOBA / Current Trends in Sustainability
Lighting Techniques and TechnologiesPractical Applications Think about: Where do we need light? The answer is almost never “everywhere”. AOBA / Current Trends in Sustainability
Lighting Techniques and TechnologiesPractical Applications Think about: Where do we need light? • Focal points and accenting • Entrances and wayfinding • Task surfaces AOBA / Current Trends in Sustainability
Lighting Techniques and TechnologiesPractical Applications Don’t always pick the solution you’ve seen before. AOBA / Current Trends in Sustainability
What’s next? Digital control signals sent over existing AC power lines for lighting upgrades and retrofit solutions. OLEDs : Organic Light Emitting Diodes AOBA / Current Trends in Sustainability
