Han Dynasty • Liu Bang declared himself first emperor of the Han Dynasty in 202 BC • First goal was to destroy the rival king’s power
Centralized Government • Central authority controls the running of a state • Hundreds of local officials of provinces reported to the central government • Liu Bang lowered taxes and softened harsh punishments
Mandate of Heaven • This was a sneaky way for new emperors to gain control of China • Meant to legitimize the rule of leaders in China • This was what the Zhou leaders of China used to justify their conquest of Shang rulers
