Challenges Technical problems • Not enough available server space. • Server not available from April to August 2002. • Unplanned downtime from parent organization.
Challenges Limited Personnel • One FTE to manage the workflow. • 1/4 FTE to create, update and maintain web site and links. • Received only $25K for labor in FY02. • Requirement to load over 1000+ CDs for 4 NOAA projects. • Requirement to link over 1000+ CDs and images for 4 NOAA projects.
Challenges Digitization & Processing Challenges • Special handling of documents that are • brittle • torn • oversize • CDMP contractor Discovery phase to determine proper format • B&W or grayscale • tiff • pdf • djvu
Challenges Digitization & Processing Challenges • Staying abreast of the new formats, standards, software, technology, etc. • Compression issues and file size
Accomplishments • Library CDMP Team is Winner of 2002 Administrator=s Award. • Digital programs are viewed as institutional assets. • Imaging and QA completed on 3 projects. • Experience gained for more complex projects.
Accomplishments • Partnerships within NOAA - Office of Coast Survey, NOS -- U.S. Coast Pilot. • Partnerships with private sector - American Meteorological Society, Monthly Weather Review.
Lessons Learned • In spite of advanced planning and hard work, there will be many obstacles beyond your control. • Maintaining a digital collection requires constant care (above regular duties). • Expect delays. • Limited personnel affects project completion. • Develop partnerships.
Lessons Learned • Promote/Market all projects within and outside of Agency: • Brochures • Presentations at conferences (AMS) • Press releases • Publish articles
