  3. 2012 Work Plan Accomplishments • Conducted a survey on commonly used deck patching products used by state and contract forces. • Sponsored andsupporting research initiatives • Working on a process for identifying and promoting innovative bridge preservation products, materials, and techniques for use by bridge preservation practitioners • Worked with the ETG, TSP-2, T-9, in getting the definition of bridge preservation approved by the Standing Committee on Highways

  4. 2012 Work Plan Accomplishments • Supporting FHWA’s Long Term Bridge Performance Program (Bridge Preservation & Durability ETG) • Supporting FHWA’s Bridge Preservation ETG’s efforts • Identified bridge maintenance related training materials that will be disseminated to users • Conducting regular quarterly teleconferences with the Bridge TWG members.

Proposed Performance Measures per AASHTO Standing Committee on Performance Management (SCPM) Discussion • Use of AASHTO Bridge Element Condition States • Update the AASHTO Bridge Health Index to be Condition-based driven (remove the cost dependency from the current calculation) • Classifying Bridge Condition under Good, Fair, Poor or a similar grading system

  6. 2013 Work Plan • Focus Areas - Research • NCHRP 14-23 – “Practical Bridge Preservation Actions and Investment Strategies” • NCHRP 14-24 – “Guidance for Communicating the Value of Highway System Maintenance and Preservation” • NCHRP 14-30 – “Extending the Life of Highway Bridge Coating Systems Through the Use of Spot Painting with Minimal Surface Preparation” • NCHRP 14-28 – “Condition assessment of bridge post tensioning and stayed cable systems using NDE” • Task 330 Maintenance Investigating the Use of Pavement Preservation Products as Low Cost Waterproofing Treatments for Bridge Decks

  7. 2013 Work Plan • Focus Areas - Workforce Development • Survey the State DOTs • Identify and collect available bridge maintenance training materials • Collaborate with FHWA, States, and Industry partners to host the training materials and make available to users

  8. 2013 Work Plan • Focus Areas - Performance Measures • Work with other AASHTO Subcommittees and FHWA to promote: • The use of bridge element condition assessment • Transition a way from the use of structurally deficient measurement • Use of a condition-based bridge health index (remove the cost dependency from the current HI calculation) • Use of a Good, Fair, Poor measurements or similar grading system • Survey the State DOTs to identify current measures used in bridge maintenance, i.e. work backlog; flag systems, etc.

  9. 2013 Work Plan • Focus Areas - Environment • Proposing two research statements: • Quantify the environmental benefits of bridge preservation • Identify environmental requirements for bridge washing • Promote the use of recycled glass as an abrasive blasting medium material in bridge maintenance.

  16. 2012 Work Plan Accomplishments • Research NCHRP Project 20-7 –Task 309: Challenges and Opportunities: A Strategic Plan for Equipment Management Research • 9 topics, approximately 5 research problem statements could result • Final report of the workshop deliberations and findings completed and posted on EMTSP Website • Topics prioritized by attendees of 2012 National Equipment Management Conference (more later)

  37. 2012 Work Plan Accomplishments General Accomplishments by the PTWG and SCOM • Sustained a high level of maintenance interest and involvement in the area of System Preservation. • Promoted the Transportation System Preservation Technical Services Program (TSP2) and the Regional Pavement Preservation Partnerships. • Promote the utilization of the National Center for Pavement Preservation for research management.

  41. 2013 Work Plan • Sustain high level of maintenance interest and involvement in the area of System Preservation. • Promote the Transportation System Preservation Technical Services Program (TSP2) and the Regional Pavement Preservation Partnerships. • Enhance the Internal Communications of the PTWG by: expanding the membership list; improving the e-mail address list; and conducting quarterly telephone conference calls and/or webinars. • Development and promotion of common performance measures for pavement preservation activities. • Work to confirm and enhance the linkage of pavement preservation activities to overall crash reductions.
