Body (middle) Every essay has at least three body paragraphs. Like an essay, each paragraph has a structure which you must follow. An easy way to remember the structure of a paragraph is to think of the ‘hamburger’ structure…..
The hamburgerStructure Introduction Body Conclusion
We want big tasty burgers!!This means a lot of explaining and a lot of evidence.
Yum!! Introduction Introduction Introduction Body Conclusion
A good paragraph has: • A topic sentence (what will you talk about in the paragraph?) • Explanation (Gives more information about your topic) • Examples (use quotes from Othello to support your ideas) • Closing sentence (summarise what you have said)
Lets look at an example. Iago has been constructed as manipulative and evil through his lack of emotion. He is able to continue lying to his friends and collogues without feeling guilty. He even admits that he is dishonest by saying: “I am not what I am”, showing that he does not care that he is being manipulative. In addition to this, his friends believe that he is very honest which leads readers to feel sorry for Othello and Cassio as they have been fooled by Iago. Therefore, Iago has been constructed as evil and manipulative because he does not show emotion and only cares about himself. Think about which sentence/s: * Introduces the paragraph (the topic sentence)* Gives more information about the topic and provides evidence* Summarises the paragraph and restates the main idea

Try it out Lets have a go at writing our own paragraph as a class. Don’t forget to follow the hamburger structure. Use the quote below to prove that Othello’s self doubt lead to his downfall. Old English Modern English meaning Haply, for I am black / And have not those soft parts of conversation / That chamberers have, or for I am declined / Into the vale of years,--yet that's not much-- / She's gone" (3.3.263-267). Othello is starting to believe that Desdemona no longer loves him because he has dark skin, is getting old and is used to fighting battles.
