CORC Next Steps OLAC/MOUG Seattle 2000-10-13 Eric Childress OCLC
Outline • OCLC’s process • Recent changes • Ongoing improvements • Next steps • Somewhere in the future...
OCLC’s process • OCLC is registered ISO 9001 company • Committed to continuous improvement • CORC is both a new service and new process: • Cross-functional team / integrated work unit • Involves users early in system design • Takes advantage of new tools (Java, XML, ISOFT, etc.) • Uses RAD (Rapid Application Design) approach: • Integrates requirements, development, testing, documentation into ~monthly cycles of updates • Installs groups of smaller-scope changes frequently rather than large-scale change releases infrequently • Concentrates on delivering good now, better later through incremental improvements
Recent changes • Corrected most problems found in records from CORC-WorldCat integration process • Modified RC Save File to allow 28 days for new records • Upgraded Practice to match production • Installed new interface with notable improvements to Welcome page • Improved Constant Data feature
Ongoing improvements • Behind the scenes improvements to: • Enhance data exchange between systems • Improve internal documentation and processes • Upgrade user support and responsiveness • Continuing problem resolution: • Working to improve processes for identifying and fixing existing problems/issues • Improving automated testing to intercept potential problems arising from software changes and speed delivery of new features • Expanding the number of staff working on/familiar with CORC
Next Steps • Updating and improving documentation: • Working on more information and documentation for Dublin Core users • Limited enhancements to existing features: • Minor interface enhancements/corrections • Improvements to resolve some indexing issues • Modifications to MARC-DC mapping • Changes to make Institutional Administrator functions more useful and easier to do • October, 2000 quarterly update to WebDewey (including some minor functional enhancements)
Next Steps (cont’) • Significant upgrades forthcoming: • Installing URL notification phase 1 • Implementing a save file for Pathfinders • Improving record output: • Exploring options for CORC-to-OPAC direct export of MARC records • Harvester improvements phase 1 • Under investigation/early requirements writing: • Providing NACO support from CORC • Working with DCMI on improving DC HTML & DC XML output • Significant upgrades to Pathfinder editing environment
Somewhere in the future... • Adding support for additional protocols: • Looking at: EAD, FGDC, VRA Core Categories, TEI, etc. • Non-English support: • Non-English interface(s) • Vernacular support (Unicode) • Expanding authority resources: • Member-input authorities • Non-LC files (e.g., MeSH) • Integrating all of WorldCat’s records into CORC RC
