  7. CSLT FRESHMAN MENTORING PROGRAM

  8. Why Freshman Mentoring? 9th graders typically need assistance with: • Social adjustment to high school • Academic requirements (higher failure rates are typical in 9th grade) • Behavior requirements (adjusting to greater freedom in high school) • The number one prevention for keeping students from dropping out of school is the building of positive “Relationships” with others.

  9. When and where will we mentor? • CSLT members will provide activities for 9th grade advisees on Wednesdays in freshman advisor classrooms during our advisement block. • CSLT members will provide tutoring for 9th grade advisees on Tuesdays and Thursdays during advisement. • Advisement is scheduled daily after 1st block. • Activity period is scheduled after 1st block on Fridays. Mentors will go to their own advisement or clubs on Mondays/Fridays.

  10. Mentor Roles • Be a Role Model. • Get to Know Your Mentees. • Build Positive Relationships with Your Mentees and Your Freshman Advisor. • Earn Their Trust and Respect. • Teach Mentees to Lead by Helping Them Develop Leadership Skills. • Listen to Your Mentees. • Help Them Make Good Choices.

  11. Mentor Responsibilities • Tell students if they need to talk about anything, you will be glad to listen. • Communicate with your freshman advisor to find out more about your group. • Get assistance with students if needed, and find out what the teacher thinks his/her students need. • **NEW**Academic Tutors report to Guided-Study teachers, Tuesday through Thursday after week 2.
