  2. What is the Internet? • Internet is a file sharing an viewing network • “Internetworking” combines computer networks to each other. • Uses routers and modems to direct information • “Infinite”

  3. Where did the internet come from? • Started in 1960 as a link between knowledge sources and institutions • Exploded in the 1990’s • By 2007 is the most widely used telecommunication device • Unlimited organic growth • 20 year domination http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4m4KZHDVWRE

  4. Why you use it everyday (whether you know it or not) • All information as a student is stored on ISU’s network (meal plans, access to buildings, etc.) • Phones and Ipod are nearly always connected • Obviously Blackboard and other school resources are only found online

  5. Internet Library • Library 101 (req.) teaches essential skills • Online it a reliable source • Basis for many papers and thesis’ • Most reliable resources available • Accessible when ever on campus readily and can set up VPN off campus

  7. Academic Resource Center • Online helping center • Can refer you to almost any helping organization in ISU • Great resource if you are struggling with a certain skill set. • Handouts and Tips all around

  8. Academic success center • Place to find info on almost anything academic • SI schedules • Learning communities • Tutor services • Workshops to help academics

  9. Online resources • Google Scholar(http://scholar.google.com) • Google has created this for students • Reliable articles • Credible sources • Citation tools available • Preferential learning

  10. Online resources • Wikipedia • Non credible resource, but great starting point • Citations on bottom of the page • Many more articles about practically anything • Usually organized information

  11. More online resources • Wolfram Alpha (Like Google, but educational and more awesome) • Can solve calculus problems and bring up statistics • Primarily an analysis tool and can be useful when you need anecdotes

  12. Remember Yahoo? I don’t… • Apparently its still around • Search engine still works but… • Yahoo answers are very popular • While some answers are correct many are just people trolling on the internet. • Don’t use it to answer serious questions

Some are… • 26% of online sex offenders used the victim's social networking site to gain information about the victim's whereabouts at a specific time.  (Journal of Adolescent Health 47, 2010)

Predators • Only 18% of youth use chat rooms, however, the majority of Internet-initiated sex crimes against children are initiated in chat rooms. (Journal of Adolescent Health 47, 2010) • There are over 747,408 registered sex offenders in the United States, and over 100,000 are lost in the system  (National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, 2012) 

  16. Don’t do these things • Tell a stranger where you are living. • Meet someone online in a home or other residence • Send sexual picture to others online • Trust the people on the Internet (except reputable sources)

  19. Who knows what a virus is? • Any program that performs functions with out the users consent or knowledge and performs malicious acts that are unwanted • Can cause both reversible and irrevocable data corruption • Can be very annoying

  20. Malware Types •  Computer viruses •  Ransom ware •  Worms • Trojan horses • Key loggers • Adware • Spyware

What’s that mean? • Viruses are self replicating files that usually consume hard disk space and corrupt different files • Trojan Horses are hidden malware in code that is usually desirable. • Worms travel through the Internet infecting and replicating at every computer they reach consuming bandwidth and memory.

  22. What’s that mean? • Ransom ware (Cryptolocker) encodes your files in an encrypted file and holds the key to the information ransom demanding payment or the deletion of the key to the files. • Key loggers record the keystrokes of your keyboard when typing and send the information to a hacker.

  23. What’s that mean? • Adware infects your computer with a file and frequently appears on you computer telling you to purchase their product. • Spyware tracks your internet usage as well as internet trends in order to steal information you want private.

Avoidance • Install and update firewall and security programs • Avoid clicking on advertisements for free I-pads. • Do not open Emails from those you do not know or expect emails from • Do not use Internet Explorer (Firefox or Chrome are faster and safer) • Download Adblock or AdblockPlus. Its free and stops most ads. • Download a Flash Control for your Browser (Also Free)

  25. Security • Many computers come with some level of basic security • Its recommended to purchase additional software to help protect you computer • Never install 2 anti virus programs

  27. IT and what they can do • Can help you remove Viruses or other Malware on your computer • Help install software from the IT site • Help with windows/ Mac related errors • Help connect your computer to Iastate.edu network on campus

  28. What IT Doesn’t Do • Look through your personal files when they need to remove a virus • Install dual boot software (Mac booting, BCD,etc.) • Monitor your internet traffic • Help with engineering software (solidworks, matlab) • Help with most blackboard problems

The NSA • Hardware Repair? Iowa state Computer Services 515-294-2218 • Blackboard? Contact your professor first. Then IT may be able to help as a last resort.

Things You Should Know • How to open Command line: Start Menu->type “cmd” in the search bar -> Hit Enter • Find your IP Address: In command line, type “ipconfig /all” -> look for a line that says “ipV4 Address” 10.xx.xx • Find your Mac address: In command Line, type “ipconfig /all” look for a line that says “Physical Address” Letter #- Letter #

  31. FAQ • Q:“I keep getting BAYU messages, can you stop sending them?” A: “We don’t send them, they are automatic. Follow the directions in the E-mail to opt out of the program.” • Q: “Microsoft contacted me and said “…” ” A: “95% of the time these calls are fake, do not give them ANY info. You call Microsoft, Microsoft DOES NOT call you”

  32. Finishing the pun • Internet cookies are files that are stored on your computer by the sites you visit • They contain info like your passwords and previous searches • They can easily be removed by going to the settings of your browser

  33. FACTS: • 90% of the Internet is now cat photos • Of the remaining 10% , 8% is Facebook, 2% is blogs. • .001% is actually information and can be considered negligible.
