Objectives of STEM • To develop a greater awareness of how my subject might be applied in an industrial setting • To identify and exemplify the skills and qualities STEM employers are looking for • Source materials for the development of KS3 STEM related teaching activities
Spices Nice Ltd. • Started 1972 • Since 2004, part of the Kerry Group plc. • Produce spices, seasonings, coatings & cures for the retail butchering market • utilise ingredients from all over the world • Blend to either an in house recipe or to meet customer requirements

What were the high points / low points? • HIGH POINTS • Refreshing • Great to meet a very welcoming staff in a busy yet relaxed working environment – no school bells! • Buzz in a business • increased awareness of career opportunities within a food company, and the required skills / qualities • Seeing how staff manage themselves through defined roles – different to the classroom • LOW POINTS • The unknown when first arrived & not meeting Noel Gallagher!
How will ‘Spices Nice’ impact my teaching in the future? • CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES • Potential visit • Notice board display within department • use of real life situation photos within teaching (eg.packaging & labelling topic) • Opportunity for a school based project – 5 senses and new product development? CAREERS Greater understanding of the variety of careers within a food business- more equipped to help advise pupils NEW CURRICULUM Supports the importance of a content curriculum but equally the importance of a skills based curriculum to equip pupils for the workplace
