Humankind Begins • Homo sapiens appeared about 200,000 years ago • Highly intelligent, Homo sapiens developed new technologies and ways to communicate
Adapting to the Environment • Early humans lived in family groups • They adapted to their environments by making or finding shelters, gathering food, and hunting big animals for food and clothing • Learning to adapt increased their chances for survival
On the Move • Early humans were hunters and gatherers who lived in different places in different seasons • Like earlier hominids, they learned the consequences of their actions in order to survive
Moving Across Continents • Scientists believe that early humans migrated from Africa about 100,000 years ago • They mostly used land bridges to cross into new continents
Summary • Using their intelligence, early humans were able to use a wide range of resources from the environment • They were almost constantly on the move, gathering food, plants and hunting wild animals • Over time, early humans migrated to almost every continent of the world
