Who discovered the first evidence of early humans? • Anthropologists Mary and Louis Leakey • Searched in deep canyons in Tanzania • Found stone tools that were evidence of a people group that had developed early technology • In 1959, after two decades of searching, they found a skull embedded in the ancient rock. • Determined that they skull belonged to an early hominid.

  3. Who were Hominids? A group that includes humans and their closest relatives Walk upright on two feet

  4. Who was Lucy? • Skeleton found by Donald Johanson in 1974 • Ethiopia • Dated to at least three million years • Upright walker, at least four feet high

Evidence of Early Hominid Groups • Earliest groups were australopithecines(lived in Africa) • May have lived as early as seven million years ago • Homo habilisemerged about two million years ago (first to make stone tools) • Homo erectus emerged about two million years ago • Upright walkers, larger brains, larger bones, smaller teeth • Used fire and stone tools • Migrated out of Africa
