  1. MCAS a ScholarInitiative By: Lindsay Adams, Gabby Camara, Errol Charette, DerickDaCosta, Cody Pasquarosa, Anthony Simpson, LianeDaVeiga and Angelica Steward

  2. What is MCAS all about? Public Schools are required to take the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) The MCAS is designed to measure students' academic progress and to be sure that you are learning the important subjects that will be on theMCAS test.

  3. Who takes MCAS and Why? 1993 Education Reform Law *Requires that all students be given the chance to learn, according to the Massachusetts Academic Learning Standards (MCAS). There’s a saying: You measure what you treasure. Testing is one way to measure something very valuable—a student’s learning. “Assessment” is another word for test. *These standards help teachers create lessons that cover the state standards.

  4. How Can the MCAS Help Scholars Succeed? * Scholar test scores (MCAS scores) identify strengths and weaknesses in particular subjects. * OUR goal is for every Parker Scholar to score PROFICIENT on the MCAS * Scores help teachers provide lessons that will help YOU improve YOUR MCAS scores/grades. * The MCAS can be used to determine whether you have reached the academic level to receive a High School Diploma

  5. How can we help ourselves? We will not disrupt the class when others are trying to learn…. It’s about RESPECT! Help a fellow SCHOLAR understand! We want EVERYONE to succeed! WE need to UNDERSTAND the importance of the MCAS. WE need to be sure we receive ACADEMIC SUPPORT for those areas we do not understand. We will use the web for helpful MCAS test-taking TIPS Take the MCAS seriously by trying YOUR BEST in school and on the test!

  6. Benefits for Doing Well on the MCAS You could be eligible for The John and Abigail Adams Scholarship IF you meet the requirements: • You score at the Advanced and Proficient levels on grade 10 MCAS tests in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. • Have a combined score that places you in the top 25% of your graduating class in their district. • Eligibility for the scholarship is based on a student's first attempt at taking the grade 10 tests in ELA and Mathematics. • In order to receive the scholarship, students must be enrolled in a Massachusetts public high school in their senior year and will receive an award letter in the fall of their senior year.

  7. Even if you are only in grades 3-7, you will have Intensive Academic Support for the next grade and beyond You will have to take Extra Math or ELA coursework in High School as opposed to taking such courses as Automotive, Business, Computers, Early Child Care, Banking, etc. 3. You need to score proficient by the 10th grade or you will be in jeopardy for not graduating High School with a diploma indicating you have met the MCAS requirements.

  8. Scholarly Advice 1. Take the MCAS seriously by getting the proper rest and doing your very best on the test! 2. Your scores on the MCAS mean something to everyone and our future relies on your success on this test! 3. Listen and learn in class…don’t let ANYONE disrupt your RIGHT to an EDUCATION! • Be respectful and considerate….help a fellow scholar when you can! • TEAM PARKER wants ALL SCHOLARS to SUCCEED!

  9. The End • Are there any questions about the importance for doing well on the MCAS? • What is MCAS and who takes it? • How can we help ourselves? • What are the benefits for doing well on the MCAS? • What happens if WE do NOT do well on the MCAS?
