Rise of the Church • Christianity was first persecuted • Nero started the persecution during the Roman Empire. • 313 C.E. Constantine made Christianity legal. • 395 C.E. Christianity became the official religion of Rome. • Almost all of Western Europe was Roman Catholic. • Why? • After Rome was gone, the church was one of the few stable things. • Monasteries with monks provided hospitality to travelers and refugees and saved writings • Continued to educated people. • Also set up hospitals. • Monks helped the regular people of Europe.
The Center of Life • The Church gains power and becomes the largest land owner in Europe. • This is because of tithes (gifts to the church) • Also land was taken by force. • Latin became a language of the educated. It was the official language of the church. • Most people didn’t know how to read, and only the very well educated knew Latin. • Every town and village, every manor, and almost every castle had a church or chapel.
Who Holds the Power? • The Churchbecomes the most powerful institution during the Middle Ages. • More powerful than kings, queens, or anything else. • People believed that it had the power to decide if you were going to heaven. • People’s lives were pretty awful, so the hope of heaven was all they had. • Clergy are the people who work in the church. • Priests, bishops, the Pope. • Held church services, listened to confessions, and helped people follow church laws. • The church gave comfort to people during hard and trying times.
Church’s Importance • The Church was important because it gave many jobs. • The Church built a lot of buildings. This meant architects, masons, carpenters, etc… were given jobs. • Cathedrals became the most important aspect of medieval architecture. • The Church also collected taxes. • It greatly helped the economy that was based on farming. • The church also kept the peace. It would threaten excommunication if nobles did not follow the laws of the Church. • Excommunication means you cannot take part in any church activities.
