Advantages and Disadvantages in Government • As we go through the notes you will need to fill out this chart. MAKE THIS CHART THE ENTIRE PAGE!!!
Autocracy • A single person has complete power.
Autocracy • Things get done quicker • Good leader could make good decisions (think of King Arthur) • Bad decision made by one person. • The citizens do not have a say. • One person cannot be an expert at everything!!!
Oligarchy • Very few people have complete power.
Oligarchy • More people to make decisions than Autocracy. • Decisions are still made pretty quickly. • People still do not get a say • Greed=bad rulers
Democracy • The control is put in the hands of the citizens.
Democracy • The people get a say (Voting) • More people can be experts. • If your leaders make a bad decision, replace your leaders. • Decisions take longer to make. • Stupid voters=stupid decisions. • What the majority of people want is not always right!
Organize the three government types by how many people get to make decisions: • ____________ 2. ____________ 3. ____________ Democracy Oligarchy Autocracy

Types of Democracy Presidential Democracy or Parliamentary Democracy (there is not just one flavor of soda)
Parliamentary • The Prime Minister has to answer to the Parliament. • The Prime Minister is not voted on by the people, but rather the political party with the most representatives in Parliament. Gordon Brown-Britain’s Prime Minister The British Parliament
Main difference between Presidential and Parliamentary. • Presidential-Checks and Balances and President is voted on by the people. • Parliamentary-People vote for parliament members and parliament members vote for the prime minister.
