  4. 26 January 2001: Gujarat Earthquake of magnitude 7.7 on Richter scale One of the worst Reported lives earthquakes in the lost ~ 20,000 last 180 years 167,000 persons Over 1 Million suffered injury homes affected by the calamity Over 50000 Over 10,000 small and classrooms, 5000 medium industrial units Around five million health units went out of production people needed to be damaged/destroyed 50000 artisans lost their given immediate relief livelihood The WB and ADB estimated the damages at $2.3 billion. .

On 26 December 2003, at 5:26 AM of local time, an earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale struck the city of Bam and surrounding villages in Kerman province in Southeastern Iran. ~40,000 Casualties Over 30,000 injured The Citadel of Bam which was once built up to save the lives of people, could not even save itself.

  27. Tetanus & Gangrene • Due to delay in care most wounds have become infected leading to gangrene • The only remedy is amputation • Limited supply of prosthetic devices • Sharp injuries have lead to patients developing tetanus • 113 Cases: 22 Deaths

Maternal & Child Health • Maternal Mortality ratio = 540/100,000 births • 40,000 pregnant women in the affected area • Of the population affected by the earthquake, an estimated 161,000 women could become pregnant within the year (based on a crude birth rate of 35/1000 live births). • 60% immunization coverage in the affected area – serious risk of measles outbreaks

  29. Psychological Problems • Of the affected population • 150,000 (3-4%) may require treatment for sever mental disorders • 600,000 (15%) may require treatment for mild to moderate mental disorders
