Canadian SeismographNetwork Update Jim Lyons National Earthquake Hazards Program Geological Survey of Canada
Overview • Canadian National Seismograph Network (CNSN): Changes from 2000 - 2002 • CHASME deployment • POLARIS (code =‘PO’) network
Glossary of Terms ESP 3-c (Z|N|E), 100 sps, S-13 seismo EHZ 1-c (Z), 100 sps, S-13 seismo SPZ 1-c (Z), 60 sps, S-13 seismo BB 3-c, 40 sps, Guralp seismo HBB 3-c, 100 sps, Guralp seismo VBB 3-c, 40/20 sps, STS-1 seismo
Queen Charlotte Islands • RUB Prince Rupert, BC moved to RUBB, upgraded from dialup EHZ to BB
Southwestern British Columbia • HNB Haney, LZB Mt. Lazard, PFB Port Renfrew, SHB Sechelt, SNB Saturna Island, have all been upgraded from EHZ to BB • New BB station installed at HOPB Hope
Yellowknife Array • new BB station “YKW5” co-located with VBB YKW1 in November 2001 • Re-survey for IMS certification showed many YKA sites had wrong * coordinates; most off by < 50 m, YKW1 1.75 km, YKW2 1.0 km • NEIC, IDC, IRIS DMC informed
Charlevoix A11, A16, A21, A54, A61, A64 upgraded from ESP to HBB in Sept 2001
Other Changes • GGN St. George, NB (former ECTN SPZ) re-installed as a CNSN BB • VLDQ Val d’Or, PQ (40 km east of original ECTN VDQ) installed as a CNSN BB • MNT Montreal, PQ, upgraded from EHZ to BB • FNBC Fort Nelson, BC has moved approximately 25 km west; renamed to FNBB • FSJ Fort St. James, BC was moved 3.5 km WNW and is now FSB • GTO Geraldton, ON upgraded from regional analogue to EHZ
CNSN Summary Total CNSN and regional 2000 – 121 May 2002 – 124 +12 BB, -6 SP, -3 Analogue + 20 more temporary sites for CHASME and POLARIS experiments
CHASME Canadian High Arctic Seismic Monitoring Experiment
POLARIS Portable Observatories for Lithospheric Analysis and Research Investigating Seismicity • a Canadian geophysical research consortium focusedon investigation of the structure and dynamics of the Earth's lithosphere and the prediction of earthquake ground motion
POLARIS • Will comprise 90 HBB seismographs in 3 sub-arrays • Employ Nanometrics digitizers, VSAT telemetry, and acquisition systems for continuous real-time processing • Deployments to last 4-5 years • Will eventually include MT systems
NEHP Role • Archive continuous real-time POLARIS waveform data • Make data available via AutoDRM and real-time Internet feeds • By fall 2002, house and operate a second Nanometrics Inc. VSAT hub (earthstation downlink)
