GODS of ANCIENT EGYPT. Egypt has as many 2,000 gods and goddesses Each town had is own god and goddesses, as towns gained and lost power, the gods associated with the town changed in power too. Some gods and goddesses were similar-- slightly different powers or appearances in different areas.

GODS of ANCIENT EGYPT • Egypt has as many 2,000 gods and goddesses • Each town had is own god and goddesses, as towns gained and lost power, the gods associated with the town changed in power too. • Some gods and goddesses were similar-- slightly different powers or appearances in different areas.

GODS of ANCIENT EGYPT • Two things almost all gods had in common: • They appeared on Earth in animal form • They also had a symbol associated with their power-- Ma’at had the feather of truth • They had a partner of the opposite sex. • They often married a sibling Sekmet- daughter of Ra. She is associated with plagues and famine. She and Hathor almost killed all humans, when Ra asked to her to punish those who had forgotten him.

  4. JOBS of the GODS of EGYPT • Egyptians believed that every aspect of daily life was controlled by the gods: • Childbirth • Death • Marriage • Justice • Love • Dancing Thoth- god of Wisdom and writing. He is shown with the head of a ibis bird, and holding a writing tablet.

  5. WHAT the GODS WERE LIKE • The Egyptians loved their gods because they were like humans-- • They got into fights • Fell in love • Fought with each other • Even died. Set- Osiris’ brother. He was the god of storms and disorder. In the New Kingdom, he became the god of war. He killed Osiris and scattered the pieces of his body all over Egypt. He was punished by having to pull Ra’s chariot across the sky all day, everyday.

WHERE the GODS LIVED • The Egyptians believed that the gods lived around them: • The gods lived invisibly around everyday Egyptians. • Gods spirits worked through items, animals or special places. • The Pharaoh was the god Horus on Earth Ammut-- he ate the hearts of those who failed the feather of truth test.

  7. SO WHY the GODS? • Why would the Egyptians believe in the stories of the gods?
