  3. The sacraments are outward and visible signs of inward and spiritual grace, given by Christ as a means by which we receive that grace.

  4. Latin word sacramentummeans "a sign of the sacred.“ sacred things = things set apart

  5. Sacramentum They borrowed it from the Roman Army The oath of allegiance taken by Roman soldiers; hence, a sacred ceremony used to impress an obligation; a solemn oath-taking; an oath.

  6. The pledge or token of an oath or solemn covenant; a sacred thing; a mystery. mysterionμυστήριον

  7. The Hebrew word for "holiness,“ "kedushah" קדושה‎ has the connotation of "separateness." "you shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy" (Leviticus 19:2) Jew must be a people "set apart." God's fearful holiness is associated with his moral purity(Psalms 24:3-4)

  8. The ultimate hope is that the whole universe will be filled with divine glory, kavod. Israel can only share in God's holiness through the performance of the mizvot (sing, mitzvah)(Blessed are you, Lord God…who has sanctified us by your commandments). kedushah is applied to parts of the liturgy, especially the doxologies based on Isaiah 6:3 and Ezekiel 3:12 which echo the praise of the angels.

  9. God, the Invisible One, whom ‘no one has ever seen' (Jn 1:18), is disclosed through something that is earthly, visible, audible, tangible, something which may be humanly experienced. DNA of faith Principle of Incarnation

  18. THE SACRAMENTS OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION • The Sacrament of Baptism

  19. Mat 28:18 And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. • Mat 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, • Mat 28:20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age."

  20. Mar 16:15 And he said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. • Mar 16:16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.

  21. BAPTISM DOES NOT SAVE It is only a process of making the person a disciple. Make them disciples -Baptizing GodfatherParentsCommunity of Faith (Church) Make them disciples

  22. Make them disciples -Baptizing -Teaching Role of family in Discipling Make them disciples

  23. Role of the Church in discipling Make them disciples -Baptizing -Teaching Make them disciples

  24. Baptism is an initiation into God’s household. “Those receiving the Sacrament are thereby marked as Christian disciples, and initiated into the fellowship of Christ’s holy Church.” Through baptism we are given a special identity—”Christian.” And we are welcomed into a special community—the church.

  25. Potential Expected Disciplined life Active continuous

  26. The Sacrament of Chrismation and Confirmation: Chrismation

  27. Chrismation is a sacrament separating a baptized person as “Holy to the Lord”. This is done soon after the Baptism by anointing with the Holy Murron. Though it can be done anytime. Murron is a Holy Chrism (a consecrated oil used for anointing). Exodus 30 This is to take place only after renouncing Satan and professing Christ

  28. THE HOLY ANOINTING OIL: In Exodus chapter 30, the LORD tells Moses to make a very special and “holy anointing oil” of “the finest of spices”, including “flowing (liquid) myrrh”, “sweet-smelling cinnamon”, “fragrant cane”, “cassia”, and “olive oil”.

  29. This highly perfumed oil was used to consecrate (set apart) the articles used in Temple worship, including the ark of the testimony, the holy tabernacle, and all its furnishings, which made them “Holy” (Kadosh in Hebrew) unto the Lord. This word Kadosh, means “set apart” "sacred, Holy, set apart for God". Set Apart SHEMEN MISCHAK HOLY ANOINTING OIL FOUND IN THE QUMRAN CAVE OF IN 1988

  30. Chrismation – Setting apart is an act of faith We Believe and take responsibility

  31. We the church believe and take responsibility We believe that our Child will be saved whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith."

  32. Expressed in baptizingand seperating (Mat 18:19) Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. By faith we apropriate the salvation for our children.

  33. Expressed in baptizingand sealing with the Chrism The Church expresses its faith And takes responsibility

  34. A CovenantGod >>>> Man "For the promise is to you and to your children" baptism as "the circumcision of Christ" and "the circumcision made without hands." baptism replaced circumcision (Col. 2:11–12)

  35. "The seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit. Amen." Chrismation Setting Apart for the Lord Sealed with Chrism

  37. Lord’s Prayer Apostle’s Creed Nicean Creed (Rom 10:9-10) because, if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For man believes with his heart and so isjustified, and he confesses with his lips and so issaved.

  38. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done,on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory, For ever and ever. 46. In the west, Chrismation is replaced with Confimation which is a youth dedication. This is after the discipling period. Confirmation is typically reserved to those of "the age of reason"

  47. Confirmation In the Mar Thoma Church Confession and Confirmation are usually done as a part of the First Communion at the age of maturity.
