  1. 2ndGrade Parent Orientation Welcome, parents and students!

  3. Arrival, Dismissal, School Visits, Absences, Tardiness

  4. Arrival (Transportation) • School gates will open at 7:30 a.m.  Students CANNOT be dropped off before this time. • Students may go directly to their classrooms or directly to the cafeteria for breakfast.   • Breakfast will stop being served at 7:55 a.m. Please note that students are marked tardy at 8:00 a.m. Students arriving on late buses will be provided with breakfast if needed.

  5. Dismissal (Transportation) • If your child is a car rider please be sure to place your sign in your window to keep the line moving • If you need a sign please get one from the office or request that a new sign be given to your child by contacting the main office • Please send a note or notify the school as soon as possible with any changes in daily or regular transportation

  6. School Visits/Early Checkout • For school visits you must go to the main office and obtain a badge • To take your child during the school day you must check them out in the office • All visitors or individuals checking out students must be on the child’s approved list and a state-issued form of identification with photo is required

  7. Absences/Tardiness • Regular attendance is required for your child to be successful! • Please make sure your child is well-rested and ready to learn • If your child arrives after the tardy bell, you need to park your car and sign your child in for the day in the main office • If your child is going to be absent please notify the main office with a reason for the absence • A message can be left on the 24 hour absence hotline

Daily Schedule Tuesday - Friday • 7:30 – 8:15 Homeroom & Bellwork • 8:15 – 8:45 Specials ~ PE (Mon & Wed), Art (Thurs), Music (Tues & Fri) • 8:45 – 10:40 Language Arts • 10:40 – 11:15 Social Studies • 11:16 – 11:46 LUNCH • 11:50 – 12:15 Storytime or Teacher Directed PE • 12:15 – 2:10 Math/Science • 2:15 Dismissal Mondays • 7:30 – 8:15 Homeroom & Bellwork • 8:15 – 8:45 Specials • 9:15 – 10:45 Language Arts • 10:45 – 11:10 Math/Science • 11:16 – 11:46 LUNCH • 11:50 – 1:05 complete Math/ Science • 1:15 Dismissal

  11. Special Needs/Allergies • Please complete the health informationcard that will be in your child’s folder on the first day of school • Please make sure your emergency contact card is filled out and returned as well

Lunch/Birthday Celebrations • Lunch is at 11:16am daily • Parents can come for lunch with their child, but a visitor’s pass must be obtained from the main office • School lunch prices and nutritional information can be found the SHDC nutritional page for our school • Birthday invitations can be distributed only if there is an invitation for every student • Healthy birthday snacks are acceptable (nothing with peanuts due to allergies). Birthday snacks will be distributed only during lunch

  14. Field Trips We will be going on 3 field trips this year. More information will be provided around the time of the events. Past field trips have included: • Museum of Science and Industry • Apollo Beach Manatee Viewing Center • Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center

  15. What we will need?

Supplies • 2 packs #2 pencils • 1 pack highlighters • 2 packages notebook paper • 2 1-inch – 3 ring binders • 2 spiral notebooks • 1 pack large erasers • 1 pack markers • 2 composition books • 1 pack 3x5 index cards • 1 pack post-it notes • 2 glue sticks • 1 box tissues • 1 pair inexpensive headphones

  17. Donations • Hand Sanitizer • Tissues • Ziplock bags • Cardstock/Colored Paper • Printer Paper • Small Prizes/Rewards • Crayons, Markers, Glue sticks • Simple Board Games/Puzzles

Student Folder/Agenda • Each student will receive a planner and communication folder on the first day of school • Students are strongly encouraged to record their daily assignments • You must view your child’s agenda and initial it daily acknowledging that you are aware of any homework or other important school information • This folder will also notify you of any other events that occurred during the day • Accomplishments, tardies, grades, disciplinary issues, etc.

Homework • Students will have homework every day of the week except for Friday • Homework will reinforce daily lessons • In addition to your child’s daily homework assignments, please work on your child’s vocabulary, reading, writing, and math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) skills daily

Reading Log • Reading logs must be completed Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights • Thursday is a free day ONLY if the reading log was completed ON TIME Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday • The reading log is INCOMPLETE without an adult signature • A minimum of 60 minutes of reading time is required to be done each week

Discipline • School Rules: • Listen & follow directions • Keep hands, feet & objects to yourself • Stay in your assigned place and walk quickly in the hall • Respect teachers, adults and fellow students • Be prepared for school and do your best work everyday • Rewards for Appropriate Behaviors: • Rewards/treats • Privileges • Special events/Fun Friday activities • Special recognition • Consequences for Poor Choices: • Warning • A mark in the behavior folder (can include time out and/or loss of a class privilege depending on severity) • A second mark in the behavior folder (may include parental contact and/or increased time out) • An incomplete homework assignment of three marks in the behavior folder will result in a visit to study hall instead of participation in any “Fun Friday” events. • Severe or repetitive infractions in a short amount of time may result in an office referral. (Student will conference with the Principal or Assistant Principal)

  24. Hard Work Should Be Rewarded!!

  25. Fun Friday • Fun Friday will be available for students who have not received 3 or more checks for the week. • One missing homework (not returned) for the week automatically means NO Fun Friday!

  26. Getting in Contact With Your Child’s Teacher

  27. Contacting your Teacher • E-mail is the best way to get in contact with me (e-mails will be checked daily) • Any notes in homework folder will be responded to as soon as possible • School conferences will take place throughout the school year and additional conferences may be requested • Please contact the school office with any emergencies
