Defining the PC • What is a PC? • Why do you use it? • Who uses one? • Where do you use a PC?
CPU (Central Processing Unit) • Processes data • The brain of the PC
RAM (Random Access Memory) • Temporary Storage of data • Called on by the CPU to store / retrieve data
HDD (Hard Disk Drive) • Permanent storage of data • Used to load the OS
Motherboard • The backbone of the PC • The part that everything else ‘slots’ into
Video Card • Processes graphics to display on the screen • Mostly used for games
Other devices… • List 5 Input devices • List 5 Output devices
Buses • FSB – is the very high speed bus for the CPU and MCH • PCIe – or PCI-E or PCI Express is the high speed bus for the graphics card • PCI – the slow bus for PCI cards and onboard graphics • USB – for removable peripherals • SATA – used to connect modern hard disks, DVD and CD drives • PATA – also called IDE, this older bus is now replaced by SATA • SCSI –the SCSI bus (pronounced skuzzy) is an alternative bus for server computers to connect hard disk drives
Removable Media • List 5 • CD • DVD • HD-DVD • Blu-ray • UMD • HVD • Floppy disk • Zip disk • Flash Drives • External HDDs
