  3. Hard Disk Drive (HDD) • Hard Disk Drives are the main type of secondary storage • Currently store up to 2TB of data • Relatively cheap per GB • Uses moving parts so can be prone to failing • 2.5” or 3.5” form factor

HDD Facts • Consider this little comparison - if the read/write head were a Boeing 747, and the hard-disk platter were the surface of the Earth: • The head would fly at Mach 800 (980,035 KMph) • At less than one centimetre from the ground • And count every blade of grass • Making fewer than 10 unrecoverable counting errors in an area equivalent to the North Island.

  9. HDD Performance • The performance of a HDD is composed of: • Drive RPM • 5400, 7200, 10000, 15000 • Seek time • Buffer Memory (MB) • RAID

  10. RAID • Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks • Combine two or more drives to improve performance / redundancy or both • RAID 0(striped), 1(mirrored), 5(striped with parity) • We will examine RAID in more detail later in the course

  11. Solid State Drives (SSDs) • Use flash memory • No moving parts • Vary in speed but can be quicker than HDDs • May have longevity issues
