Who we are • the US Department of Energy initiated the program in 1994 by committing $14.7 million • Dr. Samuel P. Massie a reputed African-American scientist champion of the cause of minority education in the US • It comprises 10 minority serving institutions • to produce top-level graduates in environmental disciplines and produce ground breaking environmental research

What we have done * • $37.1 M in grants in addition to DOE funds • 80 research projects underway for industry and government entities (75 with significant findings) • over 250 presentations in national and international conferences • 9 books, 14 book chapters and numerous publications in scientific journals • partnered in over 77 research-related and 25 education-related projects * Initial 8-year-period

Research projects • evaluation of stabilization & solidification waste-forms of mixed wastes, microbial stability of ceramic-coated metal container materials for use in the Yucca Mountain Radioactive Waste Repository • design of a novel gas chromatographic system for the analysis of radioactive uranium gases • modeling of movement of tritium in the vadose zone • computer simulation of combustion process for pollution studies
Research projects • development of computer code to model three-dimensional transient subsidence • design and assembly of a portable gas chromatographic system for the analysis of corrosive uranium fluoride gases • demonstration of bioremediation option for PCBs, PCB and explosive contaminated sites; molecular modeling of hydrophobic organic contaminants uptake and sequestration by soil organic mater
Research projects • development of a bio-sensor technique to detect agricultural contaminants in the environment • removal of arsenic and organic contaminants from waste water by natural wasters • design of an innovative sandbox for conducting research of contaminant migration through the vadose zone • optimization of performance in molten carbonate fuel cells
Outreach activities • Projects with disadvantaged communities and institutions: • community technology centers • expose students environmental issues • computer literacy to farmers • enhance math & science education • collect and analyze soil and water samples by high school students • Each Massie Chair has initiated outreach programs in their neighboring communities.
