  2. Sponge:Mood Review ~ Look at the picture. • What mood does this image create? Write a simple and compound sentence describing the mood.

  3. Essential Question: • How do you determine the author’s attitude toward a subject?

  4. Today we will • identify and distinguish mood from tone becauseone reflects the reader’s feelings, while the other reveals the author’s attitude.

  5. Activator • Have you ever emailed or text someone a message and they took it the wrong way? • Turn to your partner and say the following: • “Why didn’t you call me back?” • Describe your partner’s tone or attitude.

  6. Activator • When it comes to texting, you can’t rely on the tone of your voice, so those receiving your message infer your attitude (tone) based on the words you choose to use. • When in life would tone be important?

  7. Work Period • Create an entry in your Source Book entitled “Mood vs. Tone.” Look at the “Mood and Tone Man” Organizer to compare the terms. What part of the body can remind of what mood means? What about tone?

  8. TONE • TONE is simply the author’s attitude toward the subject. • You can recognize the tone/attitude by the language/word choices the author uses. His language will reveal his perspective/opinion (that is, whether it is positive/negative) about the subject. • Tone must be inferred through the use of descriptive words.

  9. TONE • Identifying the TONE is all about knowing the definitions of many descriptive vocabulary words. Similar to mood, tone words can be positive, neutral, or negative. Review the mood and tone word list.

  10. Tone: “A Gift in His Shoes” • Donovan and Larry were early for baseball practice. They decided to run up and down the bleachers to exercise before the rest of the team arrived. • Larry was first to the top. He whispered to Donovan, “Look over there.” He pointed to a man sleeping on the highest, narrow bench of the bleachers. His pants and shirt were faded, worn, and too large for his thin frame. One big toe stuck out of a huge hole in his sock. His scraped-up shoes sat a few feet away. • Donovan whispered, “We should help him out. Let’s hide something good in his shoes. Then, when he wakes up, he will have a nice surprise.”

  11. Tone: “A Gift in His Shoes” • How would you describe the tone [attitude] of this author? Is the tone +, -, or neutral? • Angry • Detached • Sympathetic • Evidence?

  12. Tone in Movies • You will watch 2 movie trailers about the classic movie Mary Poppins. Each video has a very different tone. The first video was made in 1964. Using your Mood and Tone Chart, list three words that best describe the attitude of the creators of the trailer. Then list 3 words that best describe your feelings after viewing the piece. Follow the same steps for the second video.

  14. Closing • Read the following sentences. Write a word to describe the tone. Then, using hand signal, put up a plus if the word is positive. Put up a minus if the word in negative. Put up a hand if the sentence is neutral. • Here we are with yet another tragic killing on Martin Luther King Boulevard.

  15. Closing • The Boulevard was hit with tragedy last night.

  16. Closing • The shocking accident of a little boy hit by a car on Martin Luther King Boulevard, brings a community together.

  17. Homework • Bring in your narrative piece. • Cut out and bring in headlines from newspaper articles. Identify the tone for at least two of the articles. Highlight evidence.
