Define Social Skills • Social skill is any skill facilitating interaction and communication with others.
What is empathy? • The term “empathy” is used to describe a wide range of experiences. Emotion researchers generally define empathy as the ability to sense other people's emotions, coupled with the ability to imagine what someone else might be thinking or feeling. • To sum up the differences between the most commonly used meanings of these two terms:sympathy is feeling compassion, sorrow, or pity for the hardships that another person encounters, whileempathy is putting yourself in the shoes of another.
Showing Empathy • 1. Listen closely as the other person expresses his or her feelings. • 2. Express empathy by saying, “I understand....” • 3. Demonstrate concern through your words and actions • 4. Reflect back the other person’s words by saying, “It seems like you’re saying....”
Why accept a consequence? • Everyone make mistakes • We learn from our mistakes ex. (Why do we fall down master Bruce? So we can learn to pick ourselves back up. Batman Begins, 2005). • Think of a time when you had to learn from your mistakes. • Think of a character from TV/Movies/books wo made a mistake and had to accept a consequence.
Accepting A Consequence • The four steps to Accepting a Consequence: • 1. Look at the person. • 2. Say ‘Okay.’ • 3. Stay calm. • 4. Don’t argue
How to Apologize • 1. Look at the person. • 2. Use a serious, sincere voice. • 3. Say “I’m sorry for…” or “I want to apologize for…” • 4. Explain how you plan to do better in the future. • 5. Say “Thanks for listening.”
What is code switching? • Code switching is the ability to alter behavior in socially acceptable ways to match the context, circumstances, and people you encounter in social situations.
What is a correct greeting? • Review the steps of ‘Greeting Others’ • 1. Look at the person. • 2. Use a pleasant voice. • 3. Say ‘Hi’ or ‘Hello.” • • Remind students that these are the general steps you would use to greet someone. Ask “Is this how you’d greet your grandmother? How would that look different?”
Have you disagreed with someone? How did they do it? What went wrong? What went right?
The steps of “Disagreeing Appropriately” • 1. Look at the person • 2. Use a pleasant voice • 3. Tell why you feel differently • 4. Give a reason. • 5. Listen to the other person.
When/How to Listen • There are many times within their day that they need to listen and also to follow instructions. Ask them for examples within their day (at school, home, with friends, at church, and at extracurricular activities and other events, etc.).
Listening/following instructions • How to Listen? • 1. Look at the person who is talking and remain quiet. • 2. Wait until the person is finished talking before you speak. • 3. Show that you heard by nodding your head, saying “Okay,” etc. • How to follow instructions? • 1. Look at the person. • 2. Say (or think) “Okay”. • 3. Do what you’ve been asked right away. • 4. Check back.
