INTRODUCTION Population wise our performance in the international competition is at the lowest rank in spite of more than one hundred crore people in the country. Our sports performance not up to mark as compared to the performance of very small and very poor countries like Ethiopia and Kenya.
CAUSES OF DETERIORATION OF SPORTS PERFORMANCE • Sports organisations at national, state and district levels are headed by non technical and non sports person. • National sports organizations under the control of influential persons. • False information to the Govt. • Mismanagement of sports authority of India. • Physical Education and sports in educational institutions is not given due place. • The role of the teachers of physical education is much below the expected level. • A statutory agency for monitoring physical education is required.
8. The role of UGC is not effective. 9. The basic objectives of physical education are not being followed. 10. Commercialization (Professionalism) in sports. 11. Discriminatory role of media in exposure of sports 12. Biased attitude of the Govt
OTHER REASONS • Literally purchase of sports persons by the educational institution for the false pride • Early burnout due to intensive training and stress of competition at the early age. • Poor guidance to the sports persons who neglect studies end up frustrated

SUGGESSIONS FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF SPORTS PERFORMANCE • make physical education and sports compulsory at schools, colleges and universities • Full proof criteria for selection of physical educationists • Mass participation should be encouraged in education institution • Selection of team should be transparent • Teachers and coaches should be well qualified
Government should ensure that the physical education gets its due place in educational curriculum • The outstanding sports person in all games should get their due recognition without any discrimination • Positive attitude of media towards all the sports and games • Professional qualified and competent people should be given key post in the sports federation and sports authority of India.
