DERs and Grid Reliability • ERCOT has proposed that TDSPs map all DERs to their appropriate Transmission Load point on the ERCOT Common Information Model (CIM Load) • See DER Concept Paper, pgs. 20-21, 8/20/15 DREAM TF • This mapping will be necessary to support several of the ISO’s reliability functions • Steady State analysis • Dynamics study cases • NERC Annual Load Data Request • Potentially (down the road), load forecasting • This mapping will require putting processes in place that don’t currently exist • Based on dialogue with TDSPs, in most cases the data exists, just not the process for organizing and transmitting
DERs and Grid Reliability • ERCOT acknowledges the challenge of putting a mapping system in place and has committed to making the case for the reliability needs • Today’s presentation is the first step in making that case • This is not an urgent issue at this time • We have time to work this out and get it right
The ‘Clumpiness’ Issue • Premise: DER adoption tends to occur unevenly – that is, clustered in specific areas and neighborhoods • Concentrations of DG could eventually impact the transmission system • The following slides provide an early view of DG interconnection and penetration trends in ERCOT FOLLOWING DATA CONSISTS OF: • Registered DG in both competitive and NOIE areas, as provided via ERCOT Registration data • Unregistered DG in competitive choice areas only, as derived from TDSP-supplied data for Load Profile code updates • Does not include unregistered DG in NOIE areas
