  3. Virginia Company of London Joint stock company- people who invested money in hopes of making a profit. If JTown succeeded, each “shareholder” paid dividends “profit”. If it failed, you lost your investment.

  4. Charter Legal document given by the King that granted certain rights to a person or company

  5. Almost an Epic Fail! swampy, unhealthy area. Colonists looked for gold instead of building & planting. There was no gold! John Smith - “He who will not work, shall not eat” Colony saved when John Rolfe planted Tobacco & sold it as a profitable “cash crop”.

  7. Representative Government Voters elect people (representatives) to make laws for them!

  8. Magna Carta -1215 First English document to take some powers away from the King and give them to the people. King could not tax nobles without consulting them first.
