WHAT IS NSDS IN UGANDA?? • It is comprised of all players participating in the generation/production and use of statistics in the Country e.g Uganda Bureau of Statistics, Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies, and the Private Sector.
MORE ON NSDS…….. • The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) initiated the Development of a National Plan for generation and dissemination of Uganda’s Statistics covering the entire NSS. • This 5 year plan is called the Plan for National Statistical Development (PNSD) • The PNSD is made up of all Statistics Plans developed by Ministries, Departments and Agencies (funded by Govt, DFID, WB + UNICEF) • Given the above initiative, Agricultural Statistics in Uganda is mainstreamed into the NSDS integrated into the PNSD.

HIGHLIGHTIS OF THE AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS PLAN FOR THE MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE OF UGANDA (A) STAKEHOLDER ANALYSIS All stakeholders were listed on sub sector basis (Crops, Livestock and Fisheries)
HIGHLIGHTIS Continued (B) STATUS OF AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS (SWOT ANALYSIS) Strength– inclusion of an agricultural module in the Population and Housing Census (2002) and the subsequent Household surveys. - the will of govt and devt partners to fund statistics activities. - availability of HR
HIGHLIGHTIS Continued • WEAKNESS – restructuring that reduced Statisticians from 13 to 2, to regain the same straucture will take some time. - there is a skills gap
HIGHLIGHTIS Continued • OPPORTUNITIES-basket fund (Govt, DFID+WB) - availability of a Long Term Plan for Censuses and Surveys (Agric Inc) in place - Up coming Livestock Census early in 2008, followed by Uganda Census of Agriculture towards the end of 2008 - the demand for agric data

PLANNED ACTIVITIES • Strengthening the Agric stat coordination committee and set up smaller technical committees • Conduct an inventory (both statistical and non statistical) • Undertake Censuses and Surveys collaboratively with UBOS as per the plan • Training of Staff • Acquisition of Equipment (PCs, Softwares etc) • Lobby for funding by presenting our plan • Initiate the upgrading of Statistics Unit to a Divison level • M&E
