Academic Planning Data Base System Overview California State University
SystemObjectives • Collect, analyze, and provide statistical data on faculty workload and on courses taught • Conduct special statistical studies with data as needed for the Chancellor, Human Resources, Academic Affairs, CSU Administrators, CPDC and State Legislators
Overview • The Academic Planning Data Base (APDB) is a Computerized Information System based upon two separate but coordinated files: • The Faculty File – contains information on all persons compensated from instructional or administrative accounts, and having teaching responsibilities in the CSU. • The Section File – contains information on all courses offered during a given term. • The two files are linked by Social Security Number (SSN)

Key Benefits • Monitor faculty workload • Monitor student faculty ratios • Monitor course offerings, enrollments, class sizes and mode of instruction by course level (LD, UD & GD) and Course Classification (Lec, Sem, Lab, Act, etc.) • Monitor Space Utilization CPD&C
APDB System Overview Data Elements Important to CPD&C
Definition This data element identifies a particular mode of instruction for a resource segment activity. Structure Two (2) alphanumeric characters. Values Value must correspond to an authorized value in the COSAR Table 12. Latter values are listed below. ValuesCorresponding Modes 01 to 04 C1 to C4 (lecture) 05 C5 (seminar) 06 C6 (seminar/demonstration) 07 to 14 C7 to C14 (activity) 15 to 16 C15 to C16 (laboratory) 17 to 21 C17 to C21 (activity) 23 S23 - Social Work Supervision 24 S23 - Practice Teaching Supervision 25 S23 - Work-study, Thesis Project and Independent Study 36 S23 - Field Work, Studio Instruction, Supervised Activities 48 S23 - Independent Study, Studio Instruction, Supervised Activities 77 C77 (non state supported instructions, e. g. ROTC) 78 C78 (non traditional instruction, e. g. examination or evaluation, 78 modes are state supported) "C" stands for "Classroom" "S" stands for "Supervision" Course Classification (CS) Numbers
Space Type Definition A code that identifies the type of space, i.e., room, in which a particular course is most appropriately taught. Values 0 = Not Applicable 1 = Lecture 2 = Laboratory 3 = Non-Capacity 4 = Multi-mode instruction • Space Type of 0 - should always have CS Number 00. • Space Type of 1 - usually associated with CS Numbers 1 thru 6. • Space Type of 2 - usually associated with CS Numbers 15 thru 16. • Space Type of 3 - usually associated with Supervision courses CS Numbers 17, 23, 24, 25, 36, or 48 Space Type of 4 - usually associated with instructional CS Numbers 01 thru 16 • No set Space Type - Sections with CS Numbers 06-14, 18-21, 77 or 78 have no set Space Type, and the appropriate code must be determined individually by course. • The value assigned refers to the most appropriate type of space for a particular course, not the actual type of space in which the course was held.
CSR COLUMN CLASS SELECTION CRITERION FOR COLUMN* LABEL “LECTURE”Class mode is “lecture” or “seminar (CS numbers 01 thru 06) OR “Non state supported” (77) or “Non-traditional” (78) are reported as Space Type “lecture” (1)** “LABORATORY”Instructional mode is “laboratory” (15,16) OR “Non state supported” (77) or “Non- traditional” (78) is reported as Space Type “laboratory (2 or 4)” “ACTIVITY-LECT” Instructional mode is “activity” (07, 08, 09, 10, 12, 13, 14) such that the reported Space Type is “lecture” (1) “ACTIVITY-LAB” Instructional mode is “activity” (07, 08, 09, 10, 12, 13, 14) such that the reported Space Type is “laboratory” (2 or 4) or “non capacity” (3) “INDEP STUDY” Instructional mode is “independent study” (23, 24, 25, 36, 48) “OTHER NON CAP” Any class which fails to satisfy all of the selection criteria for the above columns * Corresponding CS number(s) and Space Types are in parentheses** Campuses are requested to report the ideal or optimal space type for a given class rather than the actual space type of the room in which the class was held. See APDB DED page for Space Type. HOW FTE’S ARE REPORTED ON THE APDB COURSE SECTION REPORT (CSR)
