PROPOSED HSLA-V (HPS70) DESIGN EXISTING AFCS DESIGN SPS® Plate Technology Deficiencies • Construction requires months • Longest single span is 60 ft • Design Vehicle MLC < 60 tons • Tons of material to transport • Characteristics • Geometric • Up to 200 ft single span • 4-8 years life span • Existing abutments not used • No skew • 40 ft modules • Design Loads • 1-12’ Lane (MLC 60) • 2-12’ Lanes (MLC 60) • 1-24’ Lane (MLC 115) • Max Live Load Defl < L/200 • Constructability • Segmental launching • Easy to transport • Modules should fit in standard ISO containers • Rapid construction • No field welding • Unskilled labor – secured area • Light equipment To Failure Design Loads HSLA-V Non-Standard Fixed Bridge for Military Applications RESEARCH TEAM University of South Carolina Army Corps of Engineers (ERDC-GSL) LPA Group Inc. Intelligent Engineering Augusta Iron and Steel Works OBJECTIVE Develop an innovative bridge system using HSLA-V steel (aka HPS70) for newer heavier military vehicles and longer spans than the existing AFCS Non-standard bridges. Bridge should be suitable for rapid construction using light equipment and unskilled labor.
