You have been selected to travel to the past and visit the great Mayan Empire.This journey will allow you to analyze and admire the many outstanding Mayan achievements. Your mission is to study how the Mayan people lived.

  3. The Task Your task for this project is to become an expert on the Mayan culture. You, with a group of your classmates, will be on a webquest to Mexico and Guatemala to search for information. You will complete a Poster of Information and present it to your class. You will also need to gather information on the following areas: number system, Mayan calendar, writing system, religion and rituals, art and architecture.

Step 1 Organize your group Get in your groups (no more than five) Each student will be in charge of a specific area Review the Poster of Information Requirements After you pick your task, then you will search for the information. Student Tasks: You will need at least 1 illustration from each area. You will need to write in your own words the information that you find about your area. (2 paragraphs minimum) Step 1

  10. Step 3 Organize your Poster and Presentation Poster Requirements Your poster must have a creative Title. It must have at least one illustration from each area W/ a short description next to it. All descriptions must be typed. A map of the land in which the Mayan people lived. Presentation Requirements Each student must have a role (present) You must make eye contact with other students when presenting You must speak in a loud and clear voice You must prepare your presentation.

  11. Poster of Information Requirements Your poster must have a creative Title It must have at least one illustration from each area W/ a short description next to it. A map of the land in which the Mayan people lived. All illustrations must be drawn by hand and colored.

Areas Each student from your group needs to select one of the following areas: Scientific/math achievements Architecture and layout of Mayan city and temples Mayan Calendar Religion and rituals Writing system and glyphs Art in clothing and jewelry You group will also be responsible for one of the following projects: teach a dance, make a food, make temple or make a mask and represent a Mayan folktale.

  13. Be sure to address the following questions in all areas Math (number) /science abilities How did Mayans use knowledge of math/science to build better temples and make aqueducts? Writing System explain what alphabet was composed of. Religion/rituals What is Mayan understanding of God; who is/are, he/they? What is the meaning of sacrifice? How does it compare to Catholic idea of sacrifice? What is the importance of astronomy for the Mayans? What are some Catholic ideas about the meaning of the heavens/universe Art/Jewelry/dances What are the materials from which jewelry was made? Who wore jewelry?
