Attitude The right attitude and behavior are the key factors to becoming a good driver. These attributes are so important to safe driving. Attitude is the way that you think and feel. Attitude influences driver’s behavior. By Dumba Moses K
Objectives • To raise awareness of road safety usage amongst drivers. • To promote road discipline amongst drivers • To reduce road accidents/ crashes • To avoid committing traffic offences • To save life By Dumba Moses K
Attitude…. The following qualities make up the drivers attitude. Responsibility Concentration Anticipation Patience Confidence By Dumba Moses K
Responsibility A responsible driver is concerned with the safety of; • Himself and of the passengers • All other road users particularly the most vulnerable (e.g. children, elderly, PWD, cyclists, motorcyclist. etc) A Good driver: • Plans his actions ahead to avoid causing danger • Recognizes his limitations and those of others By Dumba Moses K
Concentration Avoid driving if your are; • Feeling tired or unwell • Thinking about something else • Upset or annoyed • Suffering stress of any kind. Concentration is the key to anticipation By Dumba Moses K
Concentration………………… While on the move don’t; • Let Conversation/argument distract you • Make or answer phone calls • Listen to loud music or use headphones • Look at road maps or guides • Eat or drink • Stick non essential stickers on windows • Hang objects in your vehicle ( such as dolls) By Dumba Moses K
Anticipation Anticipation in driving means planning well ahead and acting promptly to deal with changes around you. This helps to; • Avoid being taken by surprise • Prevents some hazards developing • Take early evasive actions for those hazards By Dumba Moses K
Patience Don’t; • Drive in a spirit of retaliation or competition • Use aggressive language or gestures • Try to teach another road user a lesson • ( even if they have caused you inconvenience). Do; • Keep calm • Show restraint • Use sound judgment. By Dumba Moses K
Patience……………. • Be patient if the vehicle ahead of you is being driven by a learner. Don’t; • Drive up close behind • Rev the engine • Become impatient if the other vehicle is slow to move off • Overtake only to cut in again sharply. By Dumba Moses K
Confidence This is related to; • Skill • Judgment • Experience Good Habits • Relax • Give yourself plenty of time • Make yourself comfortable • Keep your mind on driving By Dumba Moses K
Good Habits………… • Consideration. Don’t; • Cut across the path of other vehicles • Rush through traffic • Change your mind at the last minute • Use aggressive language or gesture • Calm down By Dumba Moses K
Remember • Your actions also affect the actions of other drivers. • Lack of consideration can have dangerous consequences. By Dumba Moses K
