Introductions and Thesis: • Introductions: Introduce your information. • Hook our attention: • Scenarios • Questions • Definitions • Interesting facts • Background: • What are the basics that we need to know in order to understand everything else you will be talking about? • THESIS: The sentence that tells what you will be talking about: • TOPIC + OPINION + EXPLANATION: • A registered nurse (RN) is a fascinating profession because you provide a service that was not always available to help both the patients and the doctors.
Body Paragraphs: • Topic Sentence • Facts • Explain / Analyze the facts • Think of it like this: • SAY: what does the research (fact) say? • MEAN: what does that research (fact) mean? • MATTER: Why does that matter to your thesis / topic sentence? • Conclusion • Indent every paragraph! • New idea / topic = New PARAGRAPH
Conclusions • Wrap it all up. • This is the final thing anyone reads! • What was your point again? • Add any commentary you feel had no other place. • Talk to your audience. • Be sure you remind us of what you just wrote about.
History • Use a timeline-like approach • Information should flow • Start at the beginning and work toward the present
Small but important reminders: • Add Page Numbers • Parenthetical References: • You are the best class ever (Montes 42). • Include the actual citation in your works cited • SH = Subheading – you need one between each section • Order your sections: history, professionals impact • Need to paraphrase and quote! So obvious!
