  2. Definition-fill in with the proper word • Periodontitis is the name of a collection of…….diseases, affecting the tissues that…..and support the teeth. • It involves progressive…..of the bone around teeth, which may lead to……..the teeth. • It is caused by bacteria that….. …and grow on tooth….., particularly in areas under the ……. ……. . • Dentists ……periodontitis by inspecting the ……. around the teeth with a ……and x-rays to……bone loss.

  3. Signs and symptoms • Occasional redness; • Bleeding gums while brushing teeth, flossing or biting into hard food; • Occasional swellings; • Bad breath and a persistent metallic taste in the mouth; • Gingival recession, resulting in apparent lengthening of teeth; • Deep pockets between the teeth and the gums.

  4. Prevention • Brushing properly on a regular basis: patient attempting to direct the toothbrush…….the gum-line, so as to help….the bacterial……and formation of subgingival…..and calculus; • Flossing daily and using…..brushes, as well as …..behind the last tooth in each quarter; • Using an …….mouthwash.

  6. Prognosis • Dentists measure periodontal disease using a device called a periodontal probe. This is a thin ‘measuring stick’ that is gently placed into the space between gums and teeth, and slipped below the gum line. • If there is a pocket which is deeper than 3 mm around the tooth, home care will not be sufficient to cleanse it, and professional care should be sought. • When the pocket depths reach 5-7mm, even the dentist’s instruments cannot reach deeply enough to clean out the bacterial palque.
