NRA Background • Chartered in 1871 in New York • Created to improve marksmanship • Hunters and soldiers • Network and publications • Estimated membership between 3to4.25 million • Provides perks for members • Politics • Supported past restrictions on guns (pre 1975) • Currently oppose any additional legislation • 2nd amendment advocates

  4. Strengths Lots of Members Slightly favorable image Get’s lots of attention Powerful Lobby Very focused 2nd Amendment

  5. Weaknesses Polarizing campaign Pro-gun vs Anti-Gun Lots of negative press Recent shootings, protests Poor media image Powerful lobbying Seen as extreme

  6. Opportunities • Large membership base • Supporters to mobilize • Considerable media coverage • Avenue to gain more support • Lots of power/support in Congress • Can block gun control legislation
