2. SUDLERSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A Title 1 School & Judy Center Partner MAY 2015 Teacher of the Year Celebration Daddy Daughter Dance Financial Literacy at Sudlersville Elementary School On April 10, 2015, students participated in a day of learning all about money. They learned how money works, how to manage it, and how to donate to help others. In order for graduates to be prepared for college, careers, and responsible living, they must be financially literate. Sudlersville Elementary School worked with Junior Achievement of Central Maryland. This in-classroom event encompasses important elements of community and economy, work readiness, financial literacy, and business management. Other partnerships included Sullivan Financial, the Queen Anne’s County Chamber of Commerce, Queen Anne’s County High School, the Rotary Club, and our community members and parents. The QACHS students are currently enrolled in the Teacher Academy of Maryland offered for students who are pursuing a teaching career. SUDLERSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A Title 1 School & Judy Center Partner MAY 2015 AUTHORS OF THE MONTH *Kayla Meyers *Hayden Schrader *Alexander Brice *Ashley Alfaro Reyes *Andrea Soberno Sudlersville Elementary School Students Recognized for Black History Month Competition The third grade students in Mrs. Amy Thren's class received merit certificates on behalf of the Maryland State Conference NAACP.  This program was established to provide young people an opportunity to demonstrate their versatile talents in recognition of the spirit of this month.  Congratulations to those elementary students who participated! Congratulations to Dominque Ellingsworth-Mohen! She is one of the Maryland State Finalist for the Parent Involvement Matters Award.  She will attend a ceremony in Baltimore on June 5th.  At this time, the recipient will be announced.  We appreciate all Dominque does for our school and community.

SUDLERSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A Title 1 School & Judy Center Partner MAY 2015 Pre-K News Kindergarten News Grade 1 News It is an exciting time to be in kindergarten!  All of the hard work done during the year is coming together!  It is great to see children reading independently and creating detailed sentences.  Remember to review the word list of 50 words with your child.  If you need another list, please contact your child's teacher.    We are working on the "tricky teens" again.  It would be helpful if you looked at the math papers that come home in your child's folder to get an idea of how your child will be expected to compose and decompose the teen numbers.    Remember that our trip to Chesapeake College is May 19th.  We will be listening to a famous author, Tedd Arnold, tell his stories about "Fly Guy".  There may be some time for Mr. Arnold to sign copies of his books for children.  Books will not be on sale so you will need to provide a copy for your child if you want to try to have it signed.   May will be a busy month so watch for upcoming events!  Thank you,  The Kindergarten Team May is filled with numerous learning opportunities!  We will continue to meet with our literacy block groups.  Please read over and review papers in your child's red and white literacy folder.  We are doing a lot of reading, vocabulary work and writing!  In Math, we will be finishing up our Measurement and Time Unit and beginning our Graphing and Data Unit and then ending the month with our Shapes and Fractions Unit.  In Language Arts, we will continue to write informative, narrative and opinion writing pieces.  In Science, we will be learning about Weather.  We have set a tentative date for our final field trip to Tuckahoe State Park on Friday, June 12th.  We will have a planning meeting about this trip and parents are encouraged to attend.  Please check your child's folder for a specific meeting time.  Please remember to look in your child's home folder daily for their behavior chart and initial it. Thank you so much for your support!     Your First Grade Team Where did the school year go? May and June will be busy months for Pre-K! Please be sure to check your child’s communication folder for upcoming events such as Godfrey’s Farm, Field Day and the End of the Year party. We are starting Theme: 9 Growing and Changing. Students will be exploring how living things grow and change over time. They will continue to work on rote counting to 10, recognizing a number just after or before in a sequence, building sets using objects, subitizing (up to 10), comparing two sets, identifying letters and their sounds. We will bring closure to our theme Growing and Changing by taking a field trip to Godfrey’s Farm to pick strawberries on Thursday, May 21st. The children are very excited about going to the farm. The Pre-K field Day will be on Friday, May 22nd on the blacktop behind the school. The End of the Year party will be on Friday, June 12th. Please be on the lookout for more information which will be sent home at a later date. All parents are welcome. Please contact us with any questions or concerns you may have. Thanks for all of your continued support. Grade 3 News Grade 2 News Marvelous May! May and June will be busy months for us! Please check your child’s folder for upcoming events such as Field Day, Field trip information, end of year activities etc. There will be forms that need to be signed and returned. A field trip has been planned for Monday May 18th. Second grade will be going to The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia to culminate all of their science learning for the year. It will be an extended day trip with a return time of 4:00. We will also have our end of year “classroom campout” and our awards ceremony on Monday June 15th, so save the dates. You know we are continuing with a rigorous academic routine from now until the end of the year. Our Reading Literacy Block is going well. Most of our students continue making steady gains. Math units will incorporate geometry, money, time, measurement and graphing. In Science, we will be completing a unit on the Earth and Space and beginning our last unit on Life Science. Writing will continue to be a focus for the rest of the year. Please continue reading and completing reading logs each night and helping your child with his or her homework. Wow! It is May already! This school year is flying by. This month will be very busy. We are looking forward to our field trip to Herr’s Potato Chip Factory on Monday, May 18th, 2015. Please send in your payment as well as permission slip as soon as possible~ thank you. In addition, please mark your calendars for field day which will be on Friday, May 22nd, 2015 (with a rain date of Friday, May 29th, 2015.) Also, the end of the year Reading PARCC assessment will be administered on Thursday, May 7th and the Math PARCC assessment will be on Thursday, May 14th and Friday, May 15th, 2015. Please make sure your students get plenty of rest in order to do their very best on assessment days. Finally, the spring concert is on Wednesday, May 20th, 2015- this is for students who joined the spring chorus. Please encourage your child to continue to “READ” and write one- two paragraphs that corresponds with a chosen text. The paragraph should include – a topic sentence, three details with support from the text (with reasons) as well as a concluding sentence. The students will be completing an opinion writing benchmark in May. This assessment is very important because we will be comparing the student’s growth from the beginning of the year to the end of the year. Grade 4 News How is it May already?  This school year is just soaring past. We have accomplished so much.  May is jam-packed with field trips, field day, assessments, and preparing our students for 5th grade. It is important that students come to school every day ready to learn. We still have a lot of instruction to pass on these next 6 weeks. Encourage your child to come to school with a positive attitude and a desire to do their best until the very last day of 4th grade.  Thank you as always for your continued support. 6. SUDLERSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A Title 1 School & Judy Center Partner MAY 2015 Music Health Room Earth Day 2015! We have had several cases of Fifth Disease this spring. Fifth disease is a rash illness caused by the parvovirus B19. This is spread by being exposed to airborne droplets from the nose and mouth of infected people. Symptoms can occur one to two weeks after exposure. Some may experience a low grade fever and fatigue followed by a bright red rash on the cheeks. The rash on the cheeks can be followed by a lighter lacey itchy rash on the body which can fade and reappear for one to three weeks. Other symptoms can be headache, stomachache, and body aches. Adults may experience joint pain as well. Some never experience any symptoms. The greatest risk of viral spread is before symptoms begin, so few control measures are necessary. Though uncommon some pregnant women who have not been exposed may have an increased risk for miscarriages and stillbirths in the first half of pregnancy. Fifth disease later in the pregnancy could also lead to anemia in the fetus. Mothers who are immune need not be concerned. Pregnant women who think they have been exposed should consult their obstetrician. People with immunodeficiency or chronic blood disorders should contact their physician. Call your pediatrician if your child has a fever over 102’F, is miserable from itching or you have any concerns. MARVELOUS MUSIC MEMO Here are a few reminders for the month of May. Upcoming Performance: Spring Concert: Wednesday, May 20, at 6:30 pm Spring Concert performers include the 1st grade classes, the Spring Chorus (participating 3rd & 4th grade students), and the Spring Recorder Club (participating 4th grade students). Students are to report to SES at 6:00 pm to get ready. All students must remain with parents/guardians until 6:00. At 6:00, students will be permitted to go to the classrooms. The Concert will begin at 6:30 pm. The dress code for ALL performers is nice clothes. Dress pants and skirts/dresses are preferred. Just be sure it is comfortable enough to stand and sing in. No jeans please! Also, please be sure to avoid shirts/tops with any noticeable pictures or writing on them. If you have question about the dress code, please call. Remember, this is a performance and we want to look our best!

7. SUDLERSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A Title 1 School & Judy Center Partner MAY 2015 Math Matters A big thank you to all who helped out and all who attended our Fraction Action math event on April 28th. We had thirteen stations set up around the cafeteria and gym in what was certainly a festive atmosphere. Students were engaged in great, fun, learning activities. We hope our next event (whenever that is) will be just as successful with even more folks to join the fun! As the warmer weather approaches, don’t forget to think about ways you can incorporate math talk into your daily routines. When you are out on the ball field, have your children count bases, equipment pieces, keep score etc. Ask math questions like “How many more runs do we have than the other team?” “How many fewer players does the other team have than ours?” “What fraction of our team wore hats today?” “Can you count the balls by 2’s, 5’s?” Be creative and just get your kids thinking! Even one question a day will go a long way. Family Support Center News The Family Support Center participants and their children recently celebrated Earth Day on 4/21/15 by planting flowers and an azalea bush donated by Brusca Nursery. Theresa Fauteux, Family Center’s Child Development Specialist led the group in various activities commemorating the special day. Thank-you to Brusca Nursery for their generous donation!! English classes are back in session on Tuesday and Wednesday of every week at the Family Center in partnership with Chesapeake College. The Nurturing Parenting program is also back in session at the Family Center in partnership with the Queen Anne’s County Department of Social Services. Queen Anne's County   Council for Children & Youth Established1978 SUDLERSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A Title 1 School & Judy Center Partner MAY 2015 The Judy Center Playgroup friends, their parents and/or caregivers recently participated in Earth Day celebrations held at Sudlersville Elementary School on April 22, 2015. The Judy Center Playgroup friends worked to build a new bird house for placement in front of the school. They also installed a new bird feeder for the school front wild life habitat, in addition to planting flowers in front of the school. A big thank you to our Judy Center Playgroup friends for your contribution to the Earth Day celebration at Sudlersville Elementary School!! The Judy Center Partnership of QAC recently participated in Pre-K registrations held at Sudlersville Elementary School, Church Hill Elementary School, Centreville Elementary School, and Grasonville Elementary School where Judy Center and Family Center staff enrolled children from Queen Anne’s County in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. At this time approximately 180 children are enrolled in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library in Queen Anne’s County with the assistance of the Judy Center Partnership of QAC, the local affiliate for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. Our goal for the 2015-2016 school year is to enroll at least 400 children in the Sudlersville school zone and surrounding areas of the county. Recent donations, and grant awards from the Centreville Rotary Club, the Woman and Girls Fund, The Queen Anne’s County Council for Children and Youth, and the Judy Center Partnership of QAC help to support the $25 per year enrollment fee. This fee allows enrolled children to receive free age-appropriate books until they reach the age of 5 years old at no cost to the family. The Judy Center Partnership of QAC is proud to be able to help families build home libraries and for all children to be prepared for school success. 9. SUDLERSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A Title 1 School & Judy Center Partner MAY 2015 Parent Involvement Congratulations to Dominque Ellingsworth-Mohen! She was our PIMA (Parent Involvement Matters Award) countywide winner. She is well deserved of this award! She is now a Maryland State finalist for the PIMA award, the winner will be announced on June 5th during a ceremony held in Baltimore. We want to give a BIG thank you to several parents, which include Dominique Ellingsworth-Mohen, Tiffany Brown, Kelly Pinder, Tammy Hastings, and Margot Massie for participating in the Earth Day activities at SES on April 22nd. Earth Day at SES was a fantastic learning experience for our students. “FRACTION ACTION” was a fun Math Night, in which students and parents learned about fractions, and new ways to implement fractions at home. Thank you for attending this wonderful event. IMPORTANT DATE On June 5th we will be hosting our Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast. We will have breakfast, and certificates for each volunteer in appreciation for their time given at our school in the different areas in which they have volunteered.
