10th Grade STEM Finding Your Way on Land & Water • 8 weeks • 14 – 16 class periods • Compass Work • Topographic Maps & Nautical Charts • Laying out a challenge course
Sailing Summer Bridge – Level 1 2010 & 2011 – Twenty Novice Sailors • 8 days (9 – 3) – groups of 4 • Mornings in the classroom: boat basics, weather, knots, & charts then to more in depth physics of sailing • Afternoons on 6 - 7 different boats in 8 days with coach
Sailing Summer Bridge – Level 2 2011 – Twenty with some Sailing Experience • 8 days (9 – 3) – groups of 4 • Mornings in the classroom: BVI and passage to St. Martin challenge • 4 boat options with specs and polars • BVI weather data & Anegada Passage weather data
Plan and plot daily movements, trip log based on weather data and polars • Afternoons on the water with coaches
Other Opportunities / Outcomes • A new high school sailing team was born from new 2010 STEM sailors & two experienced sailors • Three boys (one from Level 1 and two from Level 2) were invited to race for the Governor’s Cup and their boat took 3rd in class.
Marine and Maritime Career Fair jointly sponsored by NSHOF, AACPS and the Eastport Yacht Club Foundation • Invitations to participate in festivities of the Santa Maria Cup Women’s Match Racing Championship – Olympic bound teams
