  3. Current Graduation Requirements 4 x 4 for 9th grade

  4. Distinguished Plan Students are required to complete the 26 credit Recommended HS Program with the following exceptions: • 4th Math for Distinguished will have Algebra II as a prerequisite. • IPC counts as an elective and will not meet the science requirement PLUS: 3rd year of same Foreign Language 4 Advanced Measures

ADVANCED MEASURESAdvanced Placement (AP) and/or Dual Credit (DC) • Both can work toward the 4 Advanced Measures • Score of 3 or higher on AP Exam • “B” in a DC course • Both can give you college credit • Colleges usually award based on a “3” or higher • Lone Star awards credit on college transcript • PAP courses are best preparation

Advanced Placement (AP)begins in sophomore year • AP is open enrollment • New for 2015: AP Exams will be ordered and paid for by student in February, 2015 (deadline will probably be March 1) • Cost will be approximately $90 • AP Exams are taken in May (first 2 weeks) • New for 2015: Quality points toward GPA are awarded only if the student takes the AP Exam • College credit can only be awarded by the student’s college after high school graduation and is based on AP Exam score (usually 3 or higher).

Dual Credit (DC)for Juniors and Seniors • DC requires: • Lone Star College application • Required qualifying placement scores • High School approval • College registration & payment of fees • One 3-hour English course is approximately $60 a semester. • Students are responsible for buying their own textbooks—New Policy for 2015. • Lone Star awards college credit on transcript

  9. Advanced Courses or Regular? • PAP are the advanced courses offered prior to AP and DC. • PAP, AP and DC courses give 15 Quality Points figured in GPA (by semester) • Advanced courses are more demanding • Summer Assignment for English

  10. Advanced classes? Consider these guidelines. • Must be self-motivated and an independent worker. • Must be willing to spend hours out of class completing research, projects and supplemental reading. • Must have good study skills and time management (use a planner and keep up with long-term projects). • Consider outside activities and responsibilities.

  17. Health • .5 credit required for graduation • May take any year in high school • Health (.5) or • Principles of Health Science (.5) • Medical Terminology (.5) is perquisite for Principles of Health Science only

  18. Speech • .5 credit required for graduation • May take any year in high school • Communication Applications • Teen Leadership • Professional Communications (Principles of Agriculture (1) is a prerequisite)

  23. Course Selection Timeline • February 19th (Wednesday) • Deadline for changes March 7!

  24. How to make Changes • Course Selection Forms this year—students will bring home a colored copy. • Students can make changes on this form and turn in to counselors no later than March 7. • Verification Sheets, to verify accuracy, will be distributed with March report cards.

  25. Summer School • Information available in late April to early May • Will be held at THS this year • Students can take only the following for original credit: • Communications Application • Health • PE • BIM • Government and/or Economics (seniors only)
