SUMMER @ SEAHORSE 2014 IslandBiology (ZOO TBD) July (Summer B) Islands are renowned for their extraordinary biota—inspiring biologists and providing key insights into evolution, biogeography, and ecology. As a result of the devastating effects of human colonization, island ecosystems face severe threats, and island conservation has become a vital international concern. This course will introduce students to island biology with an emphasis on speciation, adaptations, and evolution. Students get to conduct independent field research projects. Credits: 3 Class Size: 15 Lab fee: estimated at $400 (does not include tuition & food) Pre-trip UF campus meeting required Course Instructor: Dr. Coleman Sheehy Big Bend Ecology WIS TBD, June 7-14 (Summer A) Florida’s Big Bend includes over 200 miles of undevelopecoastline protecting a diverse array of highly functioning habitats, from marine grass beds to forested hammocks This course explores coastal species, communities and ecosystems. Students will conduct independent field research projects. Credits: 3 Class Size: 15 Lab fee: estimated at $400 (does not include tuition & food) Pre-trip UF campus meeting required Course Instructor: Dr. Ben Atkinson Coastal Disturbance Ecology (UF:WIS4934/SFC:WIS2930) May 26-June 6 (Summer A) Disturbance, whether natural or anthropogenic in origin, is a key component of all ecosystem dynamics. This course explores the role of disturbances in shaping coastal species, communities and ecosystems. Students will conduct independent field research projects.
