What a lockdown looked like • Lockdown called over the P.A. System to alert everyone we need to close and lock doors • Staff locks doors to the hallway, close blinds and stay away from windows and doors • Administration and Police check doors and make sure areas are secure • Everyone remains quiet until announcement is made that states “The Lenox Lockdown is complete”
What is A.L.I.C.E.? • A – Alert – make the lockdown announcement as quickly as possible • L– Lockdown – Staff secures the doors and their rooms – this includes barricading doors, if possible, from inside rooms • I – Inform – make announcements clear and with accurate information over the PA • C – Counter – If there is an immediate danger, use countering suggestions • E – Evacuate – If possible, using the information provided over the PA, evacuate building to predetermined safe areas
We Have Three NATURAL Responses • Fight Counter Strategies • Flight Evacuate • Freeze Lockdown (Secure in Place) • Which is the preferred?
ALERT • Information is the key to good decisions • Information should flow in all directions • Provide as much initial intel as possible to as many people as possible • Use any and all available means: Texts, PA, Digital Signage, Web, Twitter, Facebook, etc. • Intel may be your sensory inputs
LOCKDOWN • Excellent starting point • When should doors be locked? • Before, During, or After? Do we lock all the time? • Locked doors provide a time barrier. • BARRICADE: Door lock bars and anything in the room that may help. • Once Lockdown is in effect no one should be allowed into a secure room under any circumstances. Only open your locked door for uniformed police personnel
INFORM • As real-time information as possible will be provided by all means possible. • Use this information to make single or collective decisions as to the best option. • Be flexible because the situation will be dynamic and fluid
COUNTER • You can survive contact with an armed intruder!! • Police miss 70-80% of their shots in dynamic events. • The “bad guy” is not usually highly skilled. • Engage in acts that will require very high skill level: • Noise • Movement • Distance • Distractions
EVACUATE • Fire drill – we always evacuate to get away from danger – why not in a different dangerous situation? • Only 2% of Violent Intruder events have been by more than one person • If intruder is inside, you get outside • Cannot use car to evacuate • Reunification points established

Where is the recommendation coming from? • US Department of Homeland Security • Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) by US Department of Education • International Association of Chiefs of Police • Governor Patrick from the Massachusetts Task Force on School Safety and Security (handout) • Area schools/PD including: Dalton PD, Lenox Public Schools, Lenox PD, Miss Hall's School, North Adams PD, North Adams Public Schools, Mount Greylock School District, Pittsfield PD, Sheffield PD, Southampton PD, Williamstown PD
What will our drill look like? • School wide meeting to discuss changes in protocol. • Begin with a building lockdown. Doors will be checked and lock bars in place. • Discussion around barricading doors and what is in your classroom that you can use. • Discussion on quickest and safest way to evacuate the building from your current classroom. • Make sure all students and staff know locations for reunification for busses.
Purpose for LMMHS? • Drill is to ensure student understanding that protocols are different. • Be able to talk about how decisions are made. • Understand differences between a regular lockdown and opportunities to evacuate. • Know how to act and listen to staff. • Questions?
