Workshop Goals • Connect the role of advocacy and lobbying to advancing 501(c)(3) nonprofit missions. • Identify opportunities to influence the policy process. • Explore advocacy strategies such as direct lobbying, administrative advocacy, mobilizing your base, and working in coalitions.
So, just what is lobbying? lob·by[lob-ee] verb, -bied, -by·ing: A specific, legally defined activity that involves stating your position on specific legislation to legislators and/or asking them to support your position.
What is it again? • Contacting legislators to influence public policy broadly and legislation specifically • Serving as expert consultant • Making nonpartisan research on the legislation available • Lobbying is classified as direct (you speak) or grassroots (the general public speaks).
So, how is it different from advocacy? • Advocacy: Seeking to affect some aspect of society, whether appealing to individuals about their behavior, employers about their rules, or the government about its laws. • Lobbying: Specifically advocacy efforts that attempt to influence legislation.
Giving Voice to Mission • You can make a difference. • People working together can make a difference. • People can change laws.
