Types of Inferences Schema Based • Depend on the prior knowledge • Allow the reader to elaborate on text by adding information that has been implied by the author. Text Based • Requires reader to put together two or more pieces of information • Four techniques: 1. Predicting 2. Question Generating 3. Clarifying 4. Summarizing
How To Make Inferences • Use clues from the story to figure out something that the author has not told you. • “Read between the lines” • Draw conclusions that are not clearly stated in the reading. • Use metacognition - summarizing, inferring, creating images, and predicting are strategies
