Course Curriculum The high school mathematics course of study is based upon the national Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSS-M) adopted by the North Carolina State Board of Education in June, 2010. In conjunction with Common Core Math IB, this course deepens and extends understanding of linear relationships. Students will experience one-variable and two-variable statistics. The common core math standards can be found at www.corestandards.org.
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS • Be Respectful. • Profanity and/or disrespect will not be tolerated. Follow directions the first time they are given. • Stay focused. (No head on desk. No sleeping. No ear buds or headphones. No texting/cell phone use) • Do not pack up until the teacher says you may do so and stay in your seat until the bell rings. • Keep the area on and around your desk clean. • If you disagree with my approach, philosophy, your personal grade, etc. . . Let’s discuss it, BUT not during class time. • Be Prepared. • Come to class ready to learn. Bring course materials, pencil, paper and calculator to class EVERY day. Be in your seat before the tardy bell rings! • Have homework on your desk and start on bell work/warm-up as soon as bell rings. • Be Positive. • Believe that you can do it and you will. Be willing to TRY! • Be Responsible. • Keep up with materials and make sure your notebook stays organized. • Let me know when you are having trouble and get extra help from me or from another source. • Complete ALL classwork and homework. • Be Honest and Have Integrity. • Students who cheat or allow students to cheat off of them will receive a ZERO on the assignment or test. Appropriate work must be shown on all assignments, including tests, to receive credit. • Copying another student’s homework or allowing someone to copy your homework is cheating! Spend your time actually learning the material instead of trying to find ways to cheat. • Follow all school rules. • Dress code and electronic device policy (listed later in syllabus) will be enforced!
GRADING POLICY • Quarter Grades are based on a total points system: • (total points earned)/(total points available) • Final Grade • 40% - 1st Quarter • 40% - 2nd Quarter • 20% - Final Exam • NO LATE WORK IS ACCEPTED • Tutorials • SMART Lunch Tutorials • Every Morning Before School • Mondays A Lunch • Wednesdays B Lunch • Mu Alpha Theta tutoring after school • Tuesdays and Thursdays Wakefield Honor Code The students of Wakefield High School are committed to being honest and responsible in the completion of academic materials and interactions with the school administration and community. Cheating, stealing, plagiarism (passing off another’s work, words or ideas as one’s own), and lying (including willful distortion or misrepresentation) are considered violations of the Honor Code. Through a joint fulfillment of this code, students and faculty will achieve their fullest potential in academic excellence and character. Any student who violates any part of the Wakefield High School Honor Code will be subject to disciplinary action. • Wakefield Calculators on Loan • Wakefield High School has transitioned to a loan program for graphing calculators. Teachers no longer have graphing calculators available in their room for students to use during class or SMART lunch. Students must either complete a loan agreement (parent signature must be witnessed by a school official or form must be notarized) to check out a school calculator for the semester or purchase their own calculator. Calculators will be loaned out on a first come, first served basis. Please note: Not having a graphing calculator is not an excuse. Students who do not have a graphing calculator will be at a disadvantage in this course and will be unable to complete much of the coursework, including tests and quizzes. If you have questions concerning this requirement, please contact me.
Absences/Make-Up Work • 1. It is your responsibility to find out what you missed and to make it up. Borrow and copy a classmate’s notes. Get any handouts missed when you return to class. Get another student to help you with the material outside of class and/or come in for extra help. • 2. Assessments must be made up within one week, per my availability. • **If you are absent and miss a quiz, it should be made up during the next SMART lunch tutorial. • **Zeros will be put in for missing assignments until they are made-up. • 3. If you are absent for a school function, you are expected to get your work in advance and are expected to come to class the next day with all assignments complete.
