  1. Social Media Primer

  2. Social Media is Great For: • Building awareness and attracting new business • Fostering community • Providing helpful content and information • Connecting & making supporters happy in the process!

  3. 3 Things To Keep in Mind • Social media is a conversation, not just a one-way channel • There’s no “right” way to do it • Lots of opportunities to experiment & see what works!

  4. Have a Strategy • What are your goals? • How can social media help with your goals? • Experiment, test, and reassess • Go where your community is online • Pick channels that make sense for more return on your time and effort

  5. Microblogging • What are you doing? • SMS, instant messaging, web updates • Short, succinct updates –140 (now 117) character limit per Tweet • Started as way to document life activities, but has evolved into more uses

  6. Followers and Followees • Build up a larger network of followers to broadcast your message to a wider audience • Follow users who share worthwhile, relevant, information

  7. What’s Twitter Good For? • Quick updates, calls to action • Sharing content (blog posts, pictures, resources, etc.) • Promoting events, deals, contests, new offerings • Conference and event updates • News source, news aggregator • Solicit answers to question, get feedback

  8. Listen Too! • Track mentions of company name/replies/hashtags/keywords/lists • Listening tools like: Social Mention, Twitter Search, HootSuite, TweetDeck • Respond to questions and comments, engage with community • Use tracking data to inform strategy

  9. #hashtags to group together topics

  10. Find & Follow • WeFollow • Twtrland • Twitter Lists (created by Twitter users for other users to find relevant people to follow)

  11. Disaster Response • Protests in Iran • Arab Spring • Japan Typhoon • On the ground, real-time updates, accessible when traditional web and media are not

  12. Tag Photo on a Page

  13. More on Tagging Photos on a Page • You do not have to post photo to your personal profile first • You can post as page (if you are admin) or as yourself • Individual privacy settings to prevent yourself from being tagged or require pre-approval for tags (tagging restrictions can also be set by page)

  14. You can tag photo using “@” sign before name of the page from your personal profile. It will appear on your personal profile AND the page

  15. Facebook Profile • Connected to friends • Control privacy options: posts/pictures visible to certain people, friends, friends of friends, or everyone • Ability to message friends, post on their walls, if they allow this

  16. Facebook Page • “Likes” (formerly Fans) of Page • May not message individual group members unless they have messaged group owner

  17. Strengthen Page Network • Tag community members in photos * • “Like” other related pages (teacher pages, Forrest Yoga-related pages, brands in retail store, etc.) • Pin important status updates to top of page • Respond to messages sent to page • Share content originally posted by other members or pages

  18. Pin a Post • Click Pencil at side of post • Select “Pin to Top

  19. Highlight a Post Highlighting a Post makes it spread out across both columns of the page

  20. Target Your Updates • In Admin Panel, under Manage Permissions, check Post privacy gating

  21. Then Use Compass Button

  22. Schedule a Post

  23. Events • Best to add events from your page so you have current and past events all in one place • You can no longer invite entire Page network (i.e. Likers) SO… • Invite people from your individual profile & have other peeps do the same

  24. Leverage Personal Network • Invite your friends to event on page • Link to your page in your profile • Tag page in your personal updates (using “@” sign)

  25. Posting: How much? • Facebook PageRank (amount your page appears in newsfeed) depends on: • New content • User engagement (content that is shared, liked, commented on)

  26. Engagement is Key • # of Likes less important than how much users are engaging with your posts • The type of content matters • Content in order of likelihood of user engagement (although some studies contradict): Photos, videos, links, text

  27. Photos + Captions Work Well

  28. Tools to Add Text & Captions • Roflbot (free) • PicFont (free) • Over App ($1.99)

  29. Some Ideas for Promoting Your Page • Add “Like Us on Facebook” button to your website • Add a link to your Facebook page in your email signature • Be sure to include a link to your page in your email newsletter • Mention it to customers! • Promotion on Facebook page (i.e. “Like us to get 10% off, etc.)

  30. Blogging Sites • Blog sites: WordPress and Blogger are top two • Micro-blogging: Mini-blogs, for short updates, not as robust (Tumblr)

  31. Blogger • Blogger • Easy to set up • Easy to use • Can make it part of own domain name (i.e. http://blog.megankeane.com) • Not as robust features • Always hosted by Google

  32. WordPress • Tons of customization options • Can be used for website or just as blog platform • May use own domain name and host blog • Very complex, sometimes beyond what you need • Hard to figure out some functions

  33. Use Social Media with Blogs • Widgets from Twitter and Facebook • Easily copy & paste html code into blog or site
