  2. What Is It? • American organization founded in 1816 • Full name “American Society for Colonizing the Free People of Color of the United States” (ACS) • Dedicated to transporting freed slaves and freeborn African Americans back to Africa • Supported by mostly middle class men and women

  3. Robert Finley • Considered the founder of the ACS • Presbyterian minister/teacher • (Briefly president of the University of Georgia)

  5. Liberia • Colony founded in Africa where freedmen were returned to. • Liberia then vs. Liberia now:

  6. Public Views on the ACS • Some considered it a racist society • Others said it was of good origins, but an attempt at an American empire in Africa.

  7. End of the ACS • Formally ended in 1964, but was basically disbanded around 1919 • Transferred its journals and papers to the Library of Congress
