  1. TeleHealth Presented by: Denzann Ellis Albert Wyatt Alexander Ane Michael Kanis Jana Giordani Ryan Tabb

  2. Introduction to TeleHealth • What is TeleHealth? • What are the types of TeleHealth currently being practiced? • Adaptation of TeleHealth… By: Denzann Ellis

  3. History of TeleHealth • Developmental • Telemedicine in the 1960’s • NASA conducted first Telemedic experiment • Reaching rural areas that lack healthcare facilities • Desire for Device • Paper records/Medical Charts EMRs/PHRs/EHRs • E-Health – meeting patient needs more efficiently • Quality care means that we are saving lives!

  4. TeleHealth &The Healthcare System By: Albert Wyatt

  5. TeleHealth Implementation • Is there a need? • Who will we serve? • What services will we offer? • Who will perform the services? • What are the benefits?

  6. Efficacy of TeleHealth • Is there a benefit? • In wound care, TeleHealth saved elderly patients $650 a year in transportation alone • Patients have similar outcome scenarios • It allows for patients to have expert advice without waiting • Saves patients time • Saves providers time

  7. Current ApplicationsUsed… By: Alex Ane

  8. Types of Applications • Store & Forward • Real-Time TeleHealth • Remote Patient Monitoring

  9. Fields of Use • Radiology • Tele-surgery • Remote Patient Monitoring

  10. The Prosvs. The Cons By: Michael Kanis

  11. + Time saved by everybody + Store-and-Forward cheap and easy to access at an average cost of $0.016per transaction + Face-to-Face consultation costs very little compared to an actual visit to the doctor, often only requiring internet access and a webcam ($50 + monthly fees) + Demand for hospital space will decline, driving down prices +74% cost reduction in 2001 case study Pros (Economic)

  12. -Time wastedacquiring out-of-state license - Medicarerestrictions - Time and Moneyspent on education ($50per textbook, $1,000+to hire a consultant, $100+for tutorials and unrealistic initiative required of elders to learn about computers) -Establishing protocol requires lobbyingand compromises from vendors, Reducing incentive Cons (Economic)

  13. Benefits & Costs By: Jana Giordani

  14. Benefits… • A few benefits of TeleHealth • Tracked down the E.coli outbreak • Allows dentists to use various videoconferencing systems • Skype and digital video cameras • Keeps consultations running smoothly with the help of an attending nurse • Long term care allows patients to stay home in their own comfort • Disadvantages • With TeleHealth being relatively new to the medical field: • teleheath has not progressed to the point where practitioners can be certain technological failure will not occur during a consultation • legal issues have yet to be resolved by legislature which presents road blocks in advancement • shared network use poses problems in security and privacy

  15. Rising Costs… • The wound care facility purchased $5000 in videoconferencing equipment • This allowed for remote consultations between the patient, an onsite geriatric nurse practitioner and a wound care nurse practitioner •   After one year, the facility found that they had saved a total $13,650 in transportation costs alone • The wounds of all patients involved in the study healed • This gives us a good idea at how much money and time can be saved if TeleHeathwere implemented on a larger scale.

  16. Savings… • The average cost of a TeleHealth consultation is $136.16 • This is in contrast with a cost of $246.28 and an average patient time cost of 8.5 hours for a face to face visit • Yet, the patient spends roughly 20 minutes with the provider • TeleHealth patients saved $110.12 or 44.7% over face to face patients

  17. Future Applications Hi There. I’m Dr. Bot How can I help you today? By: Ryan Tabb

  18. Technological Development(OuterSpace & Other Countries) • Access to training and specialist surgeons for less developed countries • Possible to treat soldiers in the battlefield • Surgical procedures in space

  19. Other Uses… • Keep track of your heart beat on your phone and upload it to Facebook/Twitter • If you drop dead, your friends and family will be notified quickly • Robots to serve as companions and provide services for those who are unable to do so themselves
